A Few Problems at the Range Today

I'm glad you had to deal with that not me. I would have been much more verbal and active towards them. I would not have kept as quiet as you did. I am 21 too, but I sure wouldn't let anyone walk all over me like they did. I would have been just as snide as they are and given it back to them to see if they like it. If I had been in a good mood I would have been polite and said something nice to explain who I was and who was with me, but the minute he touched my gun without asking I would have taken him out. I'm a bit protective of my baby.

Hopefully your next trips won't be this bad.

Isn't picking up your pistol without permission considered theft in Ohio?

I too admire your restraint and would not have come close to being as polite and patient as you were. At a minimum he would have heard a LOUD, profanity laced order to "Put my pistol down NOW! Do you hear me? PUT IT DOWN!!!" This behavior would be totally unacceptable from the RO himself, but much worse from his bunkmate.

A formal complaint, both written and telephonic is definitely in order to the governing board of the club. Give date, time, detailed report of the incident and inquire of them whether this conduct is acceptable. As long as you are more or less at their mercy to avoid a three hour drive, I'd be polite and sincere in your contact with the board/officers, but I would damn sure let them know what you think of this episode.

It sucks when gunners mistreat each other, especially in front of the uninitiated. Any piggish or unsafe behavior reflects badly on all of us.

Bummer when stuff like that happens. It can really sour first time experiences for newbies, and gives all of us a black eye. We have inducted a couple of members as RO's, and told them the basic thing to remember was not to be degrading, and get on a power trip when dealing with other members.

Since we are a "members only" range, there are no RO's there, except during matches. Makes it a nice, and informal place to play.

Hope all gets better as time goes by, but we all have to deal with jerks from time to time.:banghead:

Speaking as a person with range safety officer and RO experience, I feel this individual has extremely bad range manners and should not be allowed to work there. I would talk to the management.

un-authorized gun handling?

I had a guy at the range come over to my table a couple times and pick up my AR15 without permission and he grabbed it by the buttstock and dragged the flash hider on the cement as he picked it up twice! leaving my muzzle with permanent scratches! he didnt even ask, he just starts picking up my rifle asking questions? some people think if your talking to them it's OK to handle your guns? then when I tried to take it back he kept holding on to it and didnt let go, I noticed he and his buddy were drinking beers.

a few months later I ran into the same guys at the range and comes over again and I cant believe he picked up my AR again! and scratched the muzzle as he pulls the rifle off my table! for the second time!

Some people think when you leave your guns on the shooting table, it's like a gunshow, no the shooting range is Not the gunshow you should never ever pick up another man's guns without permission.

Nobody touchs my guns without permission. Sometimes a comment like. "how would you feel if I grabbed your wifes (floatation device)?" THAT is how I feel when you grab my gun without my permission. And if you do it again I will act the same way you would.
Have always gotten apology.
Kinda along the line. "you can ask about using my truck when I can ask about sleeping with your wife"

We are fortunate to have a polite, low-key, but observant and careful RO at our local range. He is always very courteous to everyone, and takes time to explain the rules to newcomers. Stories like this remind me how lucky we are.

I posted earlier but this just kept me thinking .. still almost in disbelief that such conduct could occur. Regeretably tho even in our ranks at the ranges .... jerks happen!! As for Cyberdyne's incident (both of em!!!) ... hell, that's an invite for more than even harsh words ... sheesh . Hardly credible it's so extreme.

Some words/phrases come to mind at the range ... ''please'', do you mind'', ''is it alright if ....... ''. And when it comes to trying to give advice ... for altruistic reasons .....''May I suggest'', ''you may find'' etc .... these are all things that comprize politeness, courtesy and thoughtfulness ... and cost nothing.

This Saturday gone I finished my NRA Instructor's Course ... the last thing being RSO ... and as far as I am concerned that gives me no rights for bad manners or blatent authoritarianism ....... it is simply something that I would do as a ''coordinator'' such that safety is paramount. Plus, I would no more think of grabbing someone's gun without permission than I would think I had any rights to shoot their ammo.

Some people on this lil' rock of ours take some tolerating ..... that's for sure.

i keep a smith642 offside pocket just for the fool who would attempt grabbing my glock anyone who lets someone take his weapon will someday end up shot with his own gun if he grabs your gun he is bought and paid for
