I was talking to a retired LEO who runs a local gun range the other day and we were talking about shooting and accuracy at 15-50 yards with a handgun.

he said that point shooting was more accurate in this regard with practice.

As I think he put it, point shooting is a reaction, target shooting is you training your mucles and eyes to perform.

He admitted that as a LEO he was trained with the isoceles or weaver stance. These are ideal for target shooting but draw and fire pointshooting is better for defense.

What do y'all think of this?

If you think you'll have time to get any kind of decent sight picture in a sudden deadly force emergency, you're sadly mistaken.

You need to know how to hit what you aim at ifyou have time to aim.

You need to know how to hit what you point at at close range (<= 7 yds) drawing and firing without using sights.

on that note, I think he also said that "whatever method you practice with is what you will instinctively use in a real incident." In other words if you practice point shoot you will most likely do that, if you draw and take aim you will most likely do that

Been discussed many many times, search is your friend.

Best advice is to get personal training and learn the correct basic fundamentals.

This includes the legal training as to what lethal force is, legal definitions of use. Includes taking training to know steps to not get into a situation in the first place and how to evade a situation if trouble comes to you to.

Software - Not Hardware.

Get the Software down pat, then the hardware part may never be needed, and if it does, you know for YOU what YOU can do as you have attended training.

15 to 50 yards? Fat chance with a handgun. Point shooting is strictly a close range proposition, 0 to 5 yards.

Doug.38PR,

There have been very extensive discussions of point shooting in S&T. All you've got to do is search "point shooting" and you'll find lots of opinion and some good information mixed in.

I'm certain that you misunderstood your aquaintance on the 15 to 50 yards point. If you substitute feet for yards you're much more in the realm of actual point shooting with a handgun (although 30 ft is long for PS unless you're a master of it). Yards would be for point shooting rifles.

What you'll find if you read just the past 6 month's posts on PS is that it's just another tool in the tool box that is valuable in the fast/close shooting scenario. Add distance and front/rear sight shooting is more effective.
