For all you Home Defense hero's that don't believe you have to Identify who is in your house at 3 a.m.

This should be a nightmare story. This is so wrong at a lot of levels.

Go figure.

Minnesota police wake man at 3a.m. to let him know his door was unlocked.

Associated Press
June 20, 2008

LAKEVILLE, Minn. - A Lakeville man says he feels violated after two police officers woke him up at 3 a.m. to tell him his door was unlocked.

Their surprise visit was part of a public service campaign to remind residents to secure their homes to prevent thefts. Usually, officers just leave notices on doors.

But they went further in Troy Molde's case on Thursday. Police entered the house where four children under 7 were having a sleepover, and then went upstairs to Molde's bedroom.

The officers told Molde his garage door was open, the TV was on, the keys to his truck were left in the ignition and the door to his house was ajar.

A police spokesman says the intrusion was justified because the officers' initial door knocks went unanswered, and they wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.
He says the kids inside — Molde's two sons and two nephews — were afraid to wake their dad, so the officers went upstairs.

So how is this gun related? It never mentions shooting or guns. I dont agree with what happened but this is just not on topic. Certianly it could have been bad guys just as easily as cops.

I knew a guy that owned a bar and lived above it. He left the door unlocked after close. Cops noticed did an inspection. The guy had Marijuana in plain sight. The cops had a legitimate reason to be there. Whoopsy! Drugs are bad...

Wrong Execution Of The Right Idea

Something similar happened to me one night 3 am I wake up and hear my moms front door open. I jump up and before I'm out of the room I hear "Douglas County Sheriff, is anyone home? " in a REAL loud voice.

Long story short cops were driving by, saw mom's front door wide open in the middle of the night and woke us up to see if everything was ok.

The cops did the right thing they just did it the wrong way.

Had they done nothing and the guy got robbed blind people would be grippin' about THAT

BTW IBTL :)

Is this for real? Cops can just come in your house anytime they feel like it? Shouldn't there be some kind of reasonable "procedure"? Like maybe they get on the loud speaker and yell at you from outside or something? This kind of action doesn't seem safe (or smart) for the cops to be doing....and it could put the law abiding homeowner in a really bad spot.

Think about it like this - what if a BG went into your house and anounced "_______ police department" ......... then proceded to do "bad guy stuff" because you had to hesitate, make sure the BG isn't a cop.......

I don't like anything about this........
