Police firearms

Hey,

I am doing a research paper for my Police and Society class. My topic is "History of Police Firearms." I was wondering if anyone knows of a good site to find some information about this subject

It may be easier to narrow your paper to a specific region (ie NYC, LA, etc).

Police of different Cities/States have used just about every firearm that civilians have used, and some that civilians have not (G36, UMP,

)


If you choose a specific region you can go through the guns that they have used through the years, and why they chose each model over the pervious one.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think we are gonna narrow our search down to the history of LA's guns. (We've already found some good info on the shoot out and the bank).

Be sure to put in your paper that the police were using civilian AR-15's borrowed from a local gunshop in that bank shootout. It just goes to show that so-called "assault weapons" do have uses for ordinary Joes like you an me.

LAPD have been issued Beretta 92s in 9mm, and they are permitted to carry 45ACP (Cougars?), but they are replacing them with Glocks in the near future. LAPD Swat uses a slightly modified Kimber Custom 1911 pistol in 45ACP. Their issue 9mm ammo is the Winchester 147gr Ranger Talon -- I am not sure about the 45ACP, but I suspect that it is also Winchester.

That sounds like a good plan. You can begin with the first revolvers used, and go up through the years to what they use today.

Definitely a good idea to talk about the need for rifles, and how screwed they were in the holdup.

!!! Don't forget to mention that the robbers were using machine guns, not assault weapons, and that they were NOT legally owned. !!!

Don't let your classmates or teacher use your paper to argue why we need more gun laws.

i thought in the early 20's aside from the occasional arsenal/armory heist most of the machine guns were legally owned and that Thompson couldnt sell his guns to the military so he sold them to civillians and that if i had the $$ i could order one and have it mailed to my house ?

Then came NFA 34 and the tax stamp and $200 was a LOT of money then and most people couldnt pay it to have the machine gun... except the bad guys who were by default not gonna care whether they paid it or not. since they were allready felons if they were robbing banks..

just the way i understood it. ive been wrong before. only once though
