A woman, 26, was abducted from the Washington Avenue entertainment area at gunpoint early Tuesday and was kept captive and sexually assaulted in a car over the next 7 1/2 hours before being rescued by St. Louis police following a car chase, authorities said.
After police got the suspect's car stopped on 18th Street behind the St. Louis Union Station, suspect got out of the car and jumped off the viaduct, landing some 40 feet below. He suffered leg injuries and was quickly captured, about 8:45 a.m.
The victim, found in the car, was shaken but apparently had no serious physical injuries; she was taken to a hospital for examination and treatment.
The 31-year-old suspect will be booked on several charges including kidnapping, robbery and various degrees of sexual assault, police said.
The victim, of St. Louis, and a girlfriend had just left Tangerine, a restaurant-nightclub at 1405 Washington Avenue, shortly after 1 a.m. when a man with a pistol approached the women's car. The victim's girlfriend, who was behind the wheel, jumped out when she saw the gun and ran back inside Tangerine. The gunman then got into the car and drove off.
Police searched intently throughout the night for the car, a Pontiac Sunfire, and about 8:30 a.m. it was spotted on Shenandoah Avenue. An officer lost the car, but other officers later spotted it and the pursuit resumed until police were able to curb the car on 18th. During the period when police lost the car, the suspect stopped and took the victim from the trunk and ordered her into the car, police said.
