Police Rifle - savage 10fp of rem 700 LTR

I'm looking for a police style rifle in .308 and I can't afford a GA Precision of Accuracy Int'l, so I need something is this price range. My buddy has a 700 LTR but it needed trigger work, and some other small mods. It's nice and very accurate out to 300 yards ( I haven't shot it pas that).

Any experiance with the Savage? Accurate, trigger, Magazine, customer support?

Out of the two that you picked (Rem or Savage) I'd have to say Remington.

I've had really good luck with those.

There's nothing wrong with Savage at all, it's just a personal preference.

Best trigger, and most accurate out of the box........Savage. Easiest to change calibers, or change to a match barrel......also Savage. Do it yourself in 30 minutes.

I have both the Rem LTR and a Savage 10FP and they both are great rifles. My savage doesn't have the Accu-trigger but the trigger was professionally adjusted by a gunsmith and its much better than the one on my Rem. Eventually I'll adjust the trigger on my LTR also or take it to the same gunsmith I bought the Savage from and have him do it.

You can never have too many .308 tactical rifles IMO

I have the Savage 10 in .308, with the accutrigger. I have to vote for the Savage. It shoots great. And that accutrigger is wonderful.

Remington 700 triggers are user adjustable, and there are clear instructions for doing so easily available on the web. I've adjusted the triggers on all my Remingtons. They now break clean with no creep right at 3#. They can go lighter, but I find 3# just right for field use. I vote LTR.

Of all the guns (long guns) my father has the 700 LTR is the one I want most, I like the trigger fine and it is so light short and handy too.

Have a Savage 10FP with a 10x SS scope I picked up from SWFA, and it outshoots me.

Accurate - Yes
Trigger - Accutrigger, which I personally like. Breaks like a glass rod at a few pounds.
Magazine - I don't like the magazine very much, so I often take single shots at the range. It works, but seems kind of cheap to me.
Customer support - Unknown. I haven't needed it!
Stock - The factory stock sucks, but you can get a really good replacement stock for less $100, IIRC.

I recommend them for my friends, and a buddy has picked one up and loves it. Past that I'd recommend you try and shoot both. The Remington is a fine rifle, but the Savage is my personal preference.

Fill a n00b in... what makes a rifle a "police rifle"? How does it differ from a target rifle or deer rifle?

Thanks for all the responses - I shot my buddies LTR again this weekend and it is an accurate rifle. He had a trigger job done, but I believe all the NEW Rem 700's have adjustable triggers. I'm going to have to check the Savage out up close at Cabelas next time I get there. First I need to sell a few things before I can buy anything new.


Strat81 - I don't really know what makes a "police" rifle but that's the the companies bill these rifles as. I'm not impressed with the name, but I do like the set up.

For Savages, at least, the law enforcement models (10) are just a Model 12 with a 20" barrel.

Like Legionnaire mentioned above the 700 trigger , even the older style trigger is adjustable. To have a competent riflesmith adjust a 700 trigger is not a great feat. Yes, the newer ones are suppose to be more user friendly.

On my 700 LTR I installed an old Jewell I had. Even on my AccuTrigger Savage 12BVSS I had the trigger replaced with a Sharp Shooter Supply unit.

Even though my LTR is a "tactical" rifle I use it as a target rifle and it has been the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. And it is consistently accurate. Although mine is the .223 version.

You might also consider the Rem. 700 SPS Tactical.

Another recommendation for the 700 LTR. Not only is it a good target rifle, but compare the weight - it weighs about as much as the old standard-weight sporters (~7.5 lbs). It's a very field-able rifle.
