A suburban Detroit man with a history of bizarre behavior fired at least 40 shots during a standoff with police before officers fatally shot him.

43-year-old Lance Morton, wounded a 32-year-old officer during a traffic stop Tuesday, police said.

Morton's odd actions included spying on neighbor Chad Pierson with binoculars, wearing military camouflage fatigues and playing commando with a BB gun in the woods near his home in Garden City, Michigan, Pierson told the Detroit Free Press.

"He was my weird neighbor," Pierson said. "No big deal. Everybody's got one."

Police say Morton, who was unemployed and living with his mother, used a 22-caliber assault rifle in the attack. They say he bought it last weekend for $800.

During a shootout with four officers in the parking lot of Garden City High School, officials say Morton fired at least 40 shots.

"He definitely had a grudge against the Garden City Police Department," said police Chief Dave Harvey.

The wounded officer was hit by six or seven gunshots to his limbs, Harvey said. The chief would not release the officer's name but said he joined the department in 1998.

The officer was in stable condition as of yesterday at Garden City Hospital, Harvey said.

.22 (as in LR) or .223??? If .22LR, what would he have bought that classifies as an assault rifle?

Does it matter? I am suprised they didn't call his BB gun an assault rifle...
