I've been checking police trade ins at Bud's Gun Shop, particularly S&W Model 10's. I was wondering:
1. What sort of quality are the police trade ins?
2. Does Bud's accept C&R FFL for any of their used guns, especially Model 10 's?
3. Do any of the round and/or square butt 10's have an optional thin (pencil) barrel?

Would you guys share your experiences?

I just got 2 of the square butt M10's. Both were 10-8's about 1981 models, one was in maybe 50% condition, pretty rough wobble in the cylinder when at full cock and when dropping the hammer. Second one was about 75% solid and pretty tight had decent wood original S&W grips, first one did also but extremely worn grips. Still both had nice smooth trigger pulls. Serial #'s were within 100 of each other.

I got a 10-10 about 3 years ago that was in decent condition , hoped that these two would be as nice, not quite but decent for the money.

Seems the Bud's guns are kind of suspect.

For the same price or less, J&G Sales sometimes has trade in revolvers, and the descriptions are more accurate and honest. I got a trade in Model 64 last year for $299 that is as good as anything S&W is putting out the doors right now, down to exterior finish which just had some minor holster wear.

Check the used revolver out thoroughly BEFORE you accept the transfer from your dealer. Bud's says "you are on your own" if you find something broken like a cracked frame after you have it home.

Most police trade ins (revolvers) will have lots of carry wear on the finish but very low rounds through them. Most departments only qualify once a year - the rest of the time the just get lugged and banged around and rained on. I worked for a dealer back in the 80s and 90s and we sold lots of police trade in revolvers. Mechanically all of them were like new but they looked like hell - rust under the grips and dried up WD 40 in the actions and most of the bluing wore off. But they were a very good deal.

Lucky day ....

In the spring-summer of 2006, I had 2 jobs & caught a lucky break, :D .
I found a sweet deal on a unfired NIB Ruger GPNY 4" barrel made in 1991. The GP .38spl was built for a limited run NYPD purchase. Apparently the big plan fell apart & a few savvy FFL holders picked up the cheap stainless spurless wheel guns. This is when DA & DA only semi autos were starting to gain support-sales so I could see how the Ruger SP101s & GPNYs fell thru the cracks.
I purchased the GPNY and packed it on many armed security posts, 2006-2008/2009. I had to sell the 4" DA only revolver when the economy went sour. It was sad, :( . I shot approx 400-500 rounds with no misfires, jams or problems. My regular carry/duty .38spl +P rounds were the Speer Gold Dot 135gr JHP & the 158gr lead SWC-HP(Buffalo Bore, www.buffalobore.com ).
I added a nice Hogue Tamer. I looked into a CT lasergrip but I live in a hot, humid climate. I'd wear out Li CT batteries quickly if I was outdoors a lot.
Doing EP or security work you may be outside for days or weeks then be in ice cold A/C for months.

I just took a look at JG's website. I was shocked. Last I had looked, their model 64s were under $300. $279 if I remember correctly. Just checked and in Good-Very Good condition rating, they are marked at $359.
By the time one factors in shipping and FFL fee, you're up over $400. For a gun of that quality it's still a good deal I guess, but wow those things have come up in price.
Either way, Buds price is $319 with free shipping, so the idea that JG is cheaper/similar pricing doesn't seem to be accurate any longer.
Good job getting a Model 64 while they were only $299!!!

Thanks!

I got one of the VG+ condition ones with the hand pick option for that price. I have to say, so far, it's the best firearms purchase for the money I have ever made:

m64.jpg

Locks up like a bank vault, triggger is the smoothest with no over travel and an extremely nice break. 0 wear except for some slight scuff marks from holster carry. This is a factory DAO gun that was used by Brinks security armored guard people, mine was made in 1999.

OP, keep J&G Sales on your radar. I got mine when it was on sale, hopefully they will have more in the future. If so, walk, don't run to the phone and order one up!!! :D

Answers (based on my experiences)

1. It's an S&W. Usually good quality. Perhaps you mean condition? The 10-8 I bought from Bud's was good. 60% finish wear. Good lockup. One of my favorite revolvers.

2. No. They do not take C&R. I tried. They had Mosin's. I wanted one. I had an 03 FFL. No dice. (I'm still mad at Bud's.)

3. Of the 8 or 10 I've seen from Bud's. No all have been bull barrels. However maybe they have changed supply. YMMV.

Thanks!

That's a nice 64-5.

I picked up it's sister at a local pawn shop for $240 OTD. Nice gun with a nice smooth trigger for a DAO wheelie. There is one of those big 'chain' pawn shops with the same gun in the case. They are asking $640!!

I now have 4 police/security/prison guns. The 10-8 I got from Bud's was from the Victoria NSW (Australia) police, I have a Texas Dept of Public Safety 28-2 (Texas Trooper Gun), a Taurus model 82 from a South American Prison system and lastly the 64-5 ex-Brinks gun.

I recently missed an S&W .40 cal from the Memphis PD....

Though not through Buds or online, I got one of my favourites as a PD trade in here in Phoenix.

A gen@ G22. Holster wear but little use. Was $350. Put a stronger (22#) recoil spring/guide rod) in it and a recoil buffer and it just flat shoots good for me.

Bud's Model 10 Police Trade In's

I've found that on Bud's Model 10's, they don't take C&R FFL's on any, and they have no pencil barrels, either.
The quality or condition of the Model 10 trade ins is still up in the air. Kind of mixed and unclear.
Those of you who have gotten some of Bud's 10 trade ins, please sound off.
Good, bad, or indifferent ?
At the current rate of $319 and free shipping, it sounds like a good deal. Then just have to pay the receiving FFL his fee, plus background check, and no sales tax if you're out of state.
All replies are appreciated.
Thanks.:)

I bought a used model 10 for my wife from Buds years ago. She liked it so much I got another for myself. The DA trigger pull is, by far, the best of any revolver I've ever fired. Mechanically, they were perfect but suffered from a lot of holster wear. One came with wood grips and the other with Hogue. The wood ones were terrible so swapped them out for Hogues.

I got one from Bud's too, but a few years ago. Think it was $300. In VG condition except for the finish wear, been wondering about having S&W fix it up. Anybody done that with a police trade-in M10? Worth it or better to just leave it a beater?

Got one from Bud's a couple years back, a model 10-10. It still had the sticker on it from the Victoria (Australia) police, and though it exhibited some holster wear, it was in overall good shape. Definitely glad I bought it.

Bud's

I can't vouch for the wheel guns but the .40 M&P Semi's are great. I just recently got a 40C from them and it was basically unfired. The 2 Mags were brand new in factory packaging. I am saving my pennies and dimes for a full sized M & P 40. Just examine the weapon before you accept it at the FFL and only accept it if it is up to snuff. You can't go wrong if you follow these steps. As far as accepting the C & R license it will depend it that particular gun is on the C & R list from the BATF.
