U.S. Marshal Model 10

A compadre of mine tried to order one of the square butt model 10 police trade in's offered by CDNN in their latest catalog. What he actually got was a 4 inch barrel model 10-10 w/ S/N CBR28xx.

The box and paperwork indicated this was a U.S. Marshal gun. He accepted it, and paid the higher price ($299 v.s. $139 for the used gun).

He called Jerry @ CDNN, who told him the gun was new, and unfired, and that appears to be correct. Would this gun have any value to a collector? And can anybody tell me when this gun was born?

I don't have a listing for that serial number prefix. The 10-10 series was made between 1988 to 1997. It is possible the U.S. Marshal's Service traded in the gun when they changed to using automatics. To prove this you need to get a letter from S&W historian Roy Jinks. The cost is $30.00. You can find details on the company website at www.smith-wesson.com

If you confirm the gun's background it would have a collector's value. How much would depend on how badly someone wanted it. I would suggest one of the Internet auctions.

Now if he were REALLY lucky he would have gotten one of the 10-13s that J&G had briefly.

Those are going to be worth a good bit I'd guess.

M10-13

The M10-13 was an un-announced commerative for the S&W M&P revolver. It is nearly identical to the 1899 era S&W M&P .38, even to the detail of no locking lug for the ejector rod under the barrel, round grip, incredible quality round butt walnut grips with grain such as has not been used since WWII. Sights are origianl half moon, and barrel stamping has the '96 patent date. Also has the old style hump back hammer. All in all a wonderful replica (except it does have the inertial firing pin.)

For some reason or another (the reason is the subject of some speculation among collectors) only 34 examples were made with S/N M&P0000 thru M&P0033 (some reports say thru 0034)

J&G got most of them and sold them out rather quickly after S&W collectors found out about them.

M10-13

It seems a very desirable variation. They lasted about one day after it was found out what they really were.

J&G listed them as a M10 with a S&W product number... the number didn't make sense to anyone and a SWCA member did a little detective work and the real nature of this gun was discovered.... sold out in no time flat.

A number of us bought several and were able to get consecutive serial numbers... I IRC one collector got three consectuive numbers.....

I expect these to go up a lot more.. already have gone up good bit.
