I'm going to do a little polishing on the flats of a Beretta 92FS slide and I'm wondering if I can do something to protect red paint in the safety dot indentions? I've done this on another slide and the slurry will discolor the paint and it's tough to clean. I had to repaint the safety dots in that one.

Try cutting a tiny disk of tape and sticking it in the hole. The downside is that it may pull the paint dot out when you remove it.

You could also do your polishing with progressive grits of sandpaper and a block to avoid the slurry entirely.

I've used plumbers putty to fill indentions - works as well as modeling clay and is much cheaper.
