as with any customizing it does usually affect value... but like driving a car off the lot a gun will loose 20 percent off the top unlessit is rare or hard to get- why buy "used" when new is the same or close tothe same price....

more importantly take that cheap taurus off of the American flag and have some respect for the FLAG!

He already stated, back in post#16 that it’s not a flag.

It sure helps to read the entire thread, don’t you think?

Taurus are not famous for collector /or high re sell value, so nothing to loose there.
If you are happy with your experience as home smithing take as valid point.
Your shiny six will loose some bling soon with few trips to the berm.
If the revolver give you HA headache, as someone pointed abive sand blaster is not expensive.

I will start this out by saying, I dont care for matte SS finish. So after reading all the polishing threads here and on the internet, I gathered up this equipment and got started.

So....I was at one of the LGS yesterday and just in conversation told the owner I would like to know the current retail of my gun, light use and has been polished, showed him a pic of it prior to polishing, didn't have a new one yet. He said it was only worth 50 to 70 percent of retail because i ruined the factory finish :what::what:did i ruin it??? What say you all... i did alot of research prior to polishing, best thread on THR, Stainless S&W: Passivation and Polishing (really should be pinned up somewhere, nice read)MODS...
DID I RUIN IT...:cuss: I know the Taurus haters will tell me I can't ruin a POS gun, the rest of you please chime in, especially dealers...

Okay, to answer your question one has to decide what is meant by "ruining" it. If you're talking the pure collector value of a gun, or anything for that matter, yes. Altering the absolute factory produced thing will lower the value to a collector. However, that said, your gun is probably never going to have collector value exceeding the usefulness value. It's unlikely that Taurus will have a greater collector value than its value as a usable firearm so that's unaltered. Does it look good? You think so, so that's all that really counts. For the record, I think it looks good, too.

I used to be in the motorcycle business and there was a guy who had a Honda CB-450 that he put a lot of time and money into customizing. Now, 50 years later, a 450 Honda doesn't really have great collectible value, too many were made and not really much interest. So, stock or altered, it mostly has value as a running motorcycle. A 1971 bone stock Harley Night Train is going to have a LOT more value than a customized 1971 Harley Shovelhead.
The same for guitars. A 1970 Fender Stratocaster is going to be worth a lot more with factory paint as opposed to a repainted one. But a similar vintage Harmony guitar that's not quite so true.
In neither of those examples, nor in the case of your Taurus did you ruin the gun, merely adversely affected the collectible price, which as Tallball said your gun doesn't really have.
I think it looks good.

Its collector value is nil, so altering the finish isn't going to really matter much.

I'm glad you enjoy it more now. Shoot it in good health. :)

Enjoy your gun, shoot it and smile. Ignore the haters.

a Representation of the american flag in and of itself could be considered bad form... and if as a representation of the flag-foreign made stuff is placed on the representation- the same applies...

Well, never heard such a outlandish claim, considering all the flag designs for masks, helmets, boat wraps, emblems and such. Oh I get it, ok for the Colt to be there....I'll bet 4th of July coming up with all the bathing suit designs, shirts, tablecloths, is a bad thing too.
God Bless America and our Red White and Blue

Paul----Actually it is a bad thing---also displaying the flag flat like they do with the giant flags at football games---look up the proper way to display the flag.
