I just finished this one and thought I'd share some pics.

I have always loved the Ruger SP101, and I always had imagined what my ultimate SP101 would be. When I started this project, I had in mind a full satin finish, but then settled on a duo tone look with a polished cylinder, trigger guard, and accessories.

Here is a list of everything I did to the pistol:

Full polish action job, super smooth Double Action Only using stock springs. Super secret :D recontouring and polishing of trigger/hammer engagement surfaces.

Timing and lockup on this pistol is real nice, but the cylinder endshake was removed with a custom made bearing, yielding a perfect .006" barrel/cylinder gap.

Chamfered and polished charging holes and chambers, and a polished ring around front of barrel.

The screw hole where the cylinder latch button was left rough cast so it was machined to clean it up.

Completely recontoured and perfectly blended cylinder stop nub with the frame.

Recontoured and rounded and beveled trigger, polished hammer, polished pins.

Lots more little stuff that is probably not worth mentioning.

There is over 30 hours of hand finishing to carefully remove most machining marks prior to the fine bead blast satin finish and polishing.

To top it off, is a Trijicon night sight up front, and a set of awesome Hogue rubber grips with a polished stainless hex screw on the bottom. For a shooter, I wouldn't accept anything other than the Hogue rubber grips. The hogue grip tames the heaviest of recoil out of this small pistol with full power .357 loads.

This project has yielded, for me, my perfect Ruger SP101.

Enjoy the pics!

Very...very...very purdy! Very functional too. I'd say you are on your way to the perfect J frame. Nice Job.

I'm a sucker for the SP-101 and you have made it gorgeous. You can be very proud of that work.

Gorgeous!

Now, if you had only taken the pics with Silvertips next to it for the extra bling-factor... :D

Love my Sp101, but it'll never shine quite like that beauty you have!

I thank everyone for the very kind comments. It makes all the hard work worthwhile when other people can appreciate it!

I love the simplistic design of the SP101's internals and the ruggedness of the frame. Having a detachable trigger guard containing all internals is simply a genius design.

Now, I must start on the custom right hand strong side OWB holster that's equally as beautiful!

I am a Smith & Wesson lover, but that may be the most beautiful Ruger I have ever seen. Great photos - love the one where you can see the primers reflected in the trigger guard.

Looks like the ultimate carry gun. Congrats... you even got me wanting one.

unless...

Depending on how super-ultra-secret the trigger pull/action work is, I'd like to know more about that!
If its as nice as the outside, i am sure the pull is smooth as silk.

It's almost impossible to describe everything that was done to the engagement surfaces but I will say this. Everyone has their own definition of a perfect double action trigger. Some shooters like a double action trigger they are able to "stage" and like to be able to slightly feel the stages of the cocking and letoff. Me personally, I like a buttery smooth double action trigger, that feels completely uniform and smooth from the start to the end, with a surprise break at the end and absolutely no stacking.

The SP101 trigger from the factory was staging too much for me with stacking and binding, with the break set up almost immeasurably close to the end of the triggers travel. Almost scary. All of this was taken care of, and the recontouring was to eliminate staging in the trigger and make engagement perfectly uniform from start to finish. Picture a trigger on a pivot with only a spring for resistance from start to finish. It's that smooth.

I want to know where I can get an SP101 built on a J frame. Sounds like a great gun! :neener:

DrDanke,

Until now I was really proud of my own custom work. Yours is at a level or two above mine. That is a very handsome gun and you deserve the recognition it provides.
