In my research on juvenile possession i have found that in general, gun owners don't know the laws. The least knoledgeable tend to be police FFL holders.

So, here we go (respond with your answers and logic behind them if any. If you know the law, cite it).

Given that there are no other disqualifications:

1. What is the legal age to possess a longarm (shotgun/rifle) under FEDERAL LAW?
(A) 18
(B) 21
(C) Not Defined

2. What is the legal age to Purchace a longarm (shotgun/rifle) from an FFL under FEDERAL LAW?
(A) 18
(B) 21
(C) Not Defined

3. What is the legal age to Purchace a longarm (shotgun/rifle) from a second party under FEDERAL LAW?
(A) 18
(B) 21
(C) Not Defined
(D) Illegal

4. What is the legal age to possess a handgun under FEDERAL LAW?
(A) 18
(B) 21
(C) Not Defined

5. What is the legal age to purchace a handgun from a FFL under FEDERAL LAW?
(A) 18
(B) 21
(C) Not Defined

6. What is the legal age to purchace a handgun from a second party under FEDERAL LAW?
(A) 18
(B) 21
(C) Not Defined
(D) Illegal

Thanks for your time.

Interesting. I don't know the answers but I will take a shot at it.

1) c
2) a
3) c
4) c
5) b
6) c

7. Under federal law, what is the correct spelling of "purchase?"

A. Purchace
B. Purchase
C. Not defined

Here's my guess (well, educated guess anyways, I did read laws at some point :) ).

1. C
2. A
3. A
4. C
5. B
6. B

Here's my logic:
Possession age (I believe) is un-defined in laws for both long guns and handguns. As far as purchase goes, whether it's from an FLL or private party ("legal" purchase from a responsible private party), it's treated the same under federal law, hence answers to 2&3 and 5&6 should be the same.

Hmm. I hope I know these...

1. What is the legal age to possess a longarm (shotgun/rifle) under FEDERAL LAW?

(C) Not Defined

2. What is the legal age to Purchace a longarm (shotgun/rifle) from an FFL under FEDERAL LAW?

(A) 18

3. What is the legal age to Purchace a longarm (shotgun/rifle) from a second party under FEDERAL LAW?

(C) Not Defined

4. What is the legal age to possess a handgun under FEDERAL LAW?

(C) Not Defined

5. What is the legal age to purchace a handgun from a FFL under FEDERAL LAW?

(B) 21

6. What is the legal age to purchace a handgun from a second party under FEDERAL LAW?

(C) Not Defined

Ian, you missed two. How do I know ?
You have the same answers I do.
Black Snowman also had the same answers as myself and Ian.

So there's three of us, 444, and only one clubsoda22. I say we declare ourselves correct and him wrong (that IS how the law works, right?). :p

I am interested to know which ones I've got wrong...my gun-buying has been based on the assumption that the law is as I answered...

Not true, purchases from individuals and from federal licensees are legally distinct.
Well, you're probably right, from legal standpoint, but from gun-buying legal age requirement standpoint, they are (I think), and should be the same.

"...The least knoledgeable(sic) tend to be police FFL holders..." Cops as a rule know nothing about firearms and are the absolute worst examples for range and firearm safety. Up here it's 16 for a long gun, 18 for a restricted.
According to your rules, a 16 year old can buy a handgun in a private seller but not from an FFL holder. Correct?
Spelling counts.

I would have to agree that officers tend to know the least. I have encountered at least two of Manassas' finest in personal/social settings who thoroughly believed that magazines over 10 rounds were completely illegal.

3.FEDERAL AGE RESTRICTIONS
Federal law prohibits Federal firearms licensees from selling or delivering any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than 18 years of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is other than a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than 21 years of age. [18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1), 27 CFR 178.99(b)(1)]
[Note: Ammunition interchangeable between rifles and handguns (such as .22 caliber rimfire) may be sold to an individual 18 years of age, but less than 21, if the licensee is satisfied that the ammunition is being acquired for use in a rifle.]
Additionally, it is unlawful for a person to transfer a handgun to a juvenile (a person less than 18 years of age) and it is unlawful for a juvenile to possess a handgun. Exceptions are provided for the transfer of a handgun to and possession by a juvenile for the purposes of employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting. [18 U.S.C. 922(x)]

So,
#1 is C - Not Defined.
#2 is A - 18
#3 is C - Not Defined.
#4 is D - None of the Above. There are exceptions that allow <18 to possess handguns.
#5 is B - 21
#6 is A - 18

i have to rework some things. I was just told that POSSESSION of a handgun under 21 is a felony. This if the most highly contested part of my research so i'm contacting the BATF to have an answer once and for all.

Possession under 21 definitely isn't Federally illegal. Almost all of my pistol team is under 21, and we're a recognized university event - I'm certain that our school's lawyers would have found out and killed the team if minor possession was illegal.

Edit: At any rate, this whole thread proves you point pretty darn well. The laws are so friggin' screwy that even this crowd can't agree on what they mean.

#1 is C - Not Defined.
#2 is A - 18
#3 is C - Not Defined.
#4 is A* - 18 *with exceptions
#5 is B - 21
#6 is A - 18

Remember we ara talking about Federal laws.
State and municipal laws may be more restrictive.

blues, you got it.

Anyway, the person who told me under 21 possession of a handgun is a felony is a FFL i talked to. He says the information came straight from a BATF agent...so i'm getting a letter, because i know i'm right, but i like to play it safe....and have FU papers.
