Bolt in the rifle, uncocked (I release the firing pin while closing with rimfires) or dryfire right after closing the bolt with centerfires.

I was taught that if you pull the trigger back and then close the bolt the firing pin will not be cocked. That way you don't have to drop the hammer on an empty chamber.

Oh yeah, bolts in, closed and barrel up.

Bolt in on mine, muzzle up because the way my safe is laid out and with just foam things to hold each gun muzzle down would not be stable.

That's what I was describing!

Bolt action storage

I've got room in my gun cabinet...so I store my bolt action cannon in a soft carrying case...with the action partially open and a cable lock through it...the safety on keeps the bolt from moving....also muzzle up...why would you store it with the muzzle down ?

I used to store them bolt out. Until I lost the bolt for my favorite .25-06 deer rifle and didn't find it for... one... year! How it ended up in that box, I STILL don't understand!

Bolts in and you bet I care about dings!
