I have a Polytech M14 with one of those fake (fluted) flash hiders. I'm interested in installing a real flash hider. I'm wondering if there are any firearms laws I'd be breaking in doing so. Looking to replace what I can with USGI parts. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You have to have no more than 10 foreign made parts from an official parts list. The official list only has 20 parts, regardless of how many parts really make up the rifle. You basically have to replace foreign parts with US made until you are down to 10 foreign parts. I do know some of the parts on the official list:

1. Magazine body
2. Magazine floorplate
3. Magazine follower
4. Trigger
5. Hammer
6. Disconnect/sear
7. Bolt
8. Barrel
9. Muzzle device (flash suppressor)
10. Stock (I think it counts as three - Butt, grip, and forend) If I'm correct, using a USGI stock would count as 3 parts.
11. Stock #2
12. Stock #3
13. Receiver
14. Operating Rod

You make good progress by replacing the stock and magazines with US made as they count as 3 parts each.

That's good news. Where can I get that complete part list? I did install a synthetic GI stock from Fred's, so I guess that counts toward 3. I'm having a USGI rear sight assembly put on right now, so maybe that would count? Muzzle device, bolt and magazine would bring the parts count up...hmmmm. Just a few more parts... I bought the gun for $600, hoping i could "Americanize" it for cheap. Maybe I should have dished out the $1200 for the Springfield? But then again, that's like having a Bushmaster AR15 and the Polytech. Yep, Americanization will have to do.
Please let me know if there's anything I can do to convert it for cheap.
Thank you for the info.

As far as a complete parts list and how it applies to the M14, just wait and someone will post it. You don't necessarily need 10 US parts, just no more than 10 foreign parts. Example- the Chinese AK-47 clones only have 16 of the official parts on the list, so you only need to replace 6 with US parts and you are legal. I think the M14 will have more than 16, but wait until someone else clears that up. I'm pretty sure sights don't count.

I'm not sure if it's pre-ban or not. The rifle isn't right here in front of me, but I know it has the IDE SLFD MICH markings on the receiver. I'll check the serial number when I get home from work.

OK, the markings read IDE USE SFLD MICH. 19950

The 1 in the serial number is questionable. I seriously cannot tell if it is a 1 or not. The rifle is a great shooter. Took it out to Tac-Pro today, after completely disassembling, lubing and reassembling the rear sight. It shot each of the steels with ease from 100 yds. I backed it up to 300yds using a bag rest and POW...PING! So could this possibly be pre-ban?
Thanks.

No. It doesn't matter when it was made, to be a pre-ban AW, you have to have 2 evil features and you arleady said the rifle has a fake flash hider, so it is not an assault weapon. The M14 only has 2 evil features to start with. You have to wait until after Sept 14 to put a FS with bayonet lug on, or now you can put a FS without bayonet lug on.

I was hoping someone would post the complete parts list, because you don't know how many foreign parts you have until you see the complete list.

I would think you could put a lugless Springfield Armory flash hider on it for now and be OK since postban M1As come with these.
