AWB sunset & bayonet lugs?

I'm thinking of adding a real flash hider (not the fake fluted kind on there right now) on my Polytech M14, the kind with the bayonet lug attached. Would I be allowed to do so since the AWB sunset? Any info would be appreciated.

Yep. About the only thing you cannot do is convert it to full-auto.

922r is still in effect on IMPORTED rifles and evil features. If it was a US model.. no big deal.

So I can't put a bayonet lug on it? I was really hoping to stab some truck tires in my back yard. Can you please inform me on 922r?

Missed the "Polytech" part....

922(r) is a law that says you cannot assemble from imported parts a firearm that is illegal for importation. A Polytech M14 cannot be imported with a flash suppressor or bayonet lug because that makes them "non-sporting." People can get around this requirement by replacing a certain number of imported parts with made in USA parts. This transforms the gun from an imported firearm to a domestically manufactured firearm. You can then do anything you want to it.

Basically, determine which of the parts on this list your gun possesses:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

You then replace enough parts to reduce the number of "imported" parts to less than 10. So if your gun has a total of 16 parts on the list, you replace 7 parts with US made parts and your gun is no longer considered an import. A set of US made furniture (buttstock, forearm) and a US made magazine (magazine body, follower, floorplate) knocks 5 items off the list very quickly.

Thanks very much for the info! I did put a different stock on the rifle, one from Fred's. And I use U.S. magazines. So it looks like all I need to do is replace the piston and op. rod and I should be fine. Then I guess I'll be able to replace the flash hider. Easy enough. I'll be doing that in the next few weeks. I appreciate the input.

Yeah and you be sure and report back here the very first time somebody stops you with that rifle and disassembles it. Make sure they notice which parts are US. Point out the distinguishing features of the op rod. It happens ALL THE TIME, I'm sure. Heck, I've had ATF agents show up in the middle of the night wanting to inspect my rifles for their US parts.

The whole thing reminds me of lot of the 70's and the 55 mph speed limit. It seemed like a good idea at first because we were in serious trouble with oil supply. But time went by and people started realizing it didn't make much sense out in the wide open parts of the country. But the Feds wouldn't let it be changed. So massive civil disobedience hit. People just flat out refused to drive 55. Cops wouldn't even think of stopping somebody unless they were going at least 10 over. It was well known you were safe in OK as long as you stayed under 70. Stupid laws lead to rule breaking by people who wouldn't normally break the rules. Breaking the rules routinely leads to general contempt of the rules and the people who make them. Government _usually_ recognizes that eventually. In the short term they just stop enforcing such laws unless it is on such a scale that it can't be avoided. I'm sure Century has to watch their parts count. I'm not fully convinced the "average Joe" really has to sweat whether it is legal for them to change the stock or pistol grip on their personally owned rifle. I didn't "make" the damn thing. It was legal when I bought it. I should be able to make any cosmetic or functional improvements to it I want.

Most of my local deputies have NO idea what the current federal gun laws are. They know it better not fire full auto without some special paperwork but otherwise they really don't care.

Odds are you are right, but I still prefer to err on the side of caution.

LOL, good point. Let me share with you a story of AR15 mags. A few years back at a gun show, a friend and myself were approached by a guy selling a handful of mags for about $35. We scooped up on them fast. Some were Colt, some were Sanchez, and some were Orlite. All were in good shape. Fast forward a year or two to the same gun show. I had sold the AR15 rifle, so I didn't need the mags anymore. When I tried to sell them to the vendors....it was like I was trying to hand them a hypodermic needle emblazened with AIDS on it. Nobody would even touch them, and everyone told me to get rid of them asap. See, they were stamped with words like "LAW ENFORCEMENT USE ONLY" and certain dates on them. After about an hour of this, I went to the parking lot and set them on the ground. Before I could leave the lot, a truck pulls up and looks in the sack. These two guys then make tracks for the entrance, hoping to cash in on their new find.

I can see your point on the "who cares?" issue, but I can tell you this... the folks at the guns shows sure do.

Can I easily add a lug to my lugless AK? Who makes them?
