All,

Planning on taking some of my German tool vendors shooting this weekend and was wondering of Brown's Camp is opened back up yet. Saw it was closed for rock excavation earlier this summer and am not sure if they've opened it back up.

Surely someone can clue me in.

Last I heard from the boys on ar15.com, northwestfirearms .com, Fortmoe.com, and all others Still closed.

You could try memaloose, the other side of Estacada

why are all those places closed?

(I'm stuck in a hotel in downtown portland for two weeks, so just mildly curious as i didn't bring anything to shoot)

Can you hunt around Browns Camp? It is still Coastal Elk Centerfire season and combined with Western Bow Elk season, there are a lot of hunters in the Tillamook State Forest all the way through late December, and they get mighty grumpy when you start target practicing.

The reason I ask is that last year, I got chased out of the Tillamook State Forest by an elk hunter on a Friday afternoon around 3:00. I was plinking on State Forest land up Storeyburn Rd. (exactly opposite the highway from the road into Browns Camp) which I've done dozens of times, and there were absolutely no posted signs about "no target shooting", which the hunter claimed were "EVERYWHERE!". A Friday afternoon on public land? With people 4-wheeling and shooting all around the area? And he was expecting to get an elk? Anyway, why is Browns Camp closed? Have you ever tried Storeyburn Rd. across the highway? Lots of good gravel pits.

I heard they were doing some excavating or whatnot in the Brown's Camp quarry and thus the closure. I was just up shooting off of Storyburn road Sunday morning. Didn't see anyone, or any sign and no one came to complain. Coastal Elk starts up in a few days though (11-15 I believe). I'm definitely with OregonJohnny - I can't believe anyone thinks they will get a deer or elk around Brown's Camp with all the shooting and off roading going on there year round. When I was up on Storyburn this weekend I could hear the dirt bikes and such from across the highway through my electronic muffs.

BC is closed. The other direction (east) is Memaloose. That's where people have been going while BC is being mined.

I've been hanging out in Portland for a few weeks now, Myself, and if I weren't heading home this weekend, I'd say I could meet up with a few of ya...

I do know there are "public" ranges out in the Badlands, but that's one heck of a drive just to shoot :) I passed 2-3 public ranges out there on a sightseeing ride two weeks ago... They were on Highway 20 (east of Bend) I believe, out by the University's Observatory.

I thought it was really neat that this state has fully public open shooting ranges..

Later,

Adam

Another bump, is it true, is it back open? I'll head out for an early morning shoot tomorrow if so.

Thanks Jeepmoor. I actually remeber this place now. I for some reason thought that this was an area I have yet to hear about in the greater Portland area (I have been here less than two years). Sorry If I caused anybody any undue stress..............

No worries 66912 on my poor choice of words. I retracted my statement as it was uncalled for on my part. Long hours and lots of pressure have done that to me of late.

That said, yes, it is open as blacklabelOP stated. I have not been there yet, but the neighbor headed up there this week and said it's a few yards deeper now too. BTW, don't go down into the pit to shoot please.

He said there were two groups IN the pit and it spoiled it for rifle shooting as the firing line was useless because it was towards the groups midrange in the pit.

Hoping to go there or to the local clays club tomorrow with a friend.

Current conditions?

Anybody know what the current conditions are up at Brown's?

I'm asking because I'm looking to head up there with my fiance and some friends for some Pre-Spring-Term-Get-your-ya-yas-out shooting. I/we haven't been plinking since the Summer term, and REALLY need to get the lead out before school starts back up again.:banghead:

Primarily looking to know what, if any, snow is up there, and how the roads are up to the quarry.:scrutiny:

Thanks all:cool:

Browns Camp is OPEN for shooting, Conditions Favorable

I spoke to ODF two weeks ago, and they confirmed that the quarry at Browns Camp is officially re-open for shooting. I went up last week and this week, and the conditions are perfect. There is construction on the hwy close to BC.

Snow has melted and is gone. Roads in BC have been recently graveled or graded so the holes aren't too bad. The ground is still moist and soft since there hasn't been a hot day yet, but we were in cars and had no trouble on the roads or the power line trail.

The gates to the quarry are still locked, however as the signs state you can go past the gates on foot. The quarry is only a few hundred feet past the gate, not a terribly long walk, and absolutely beautiful.

Gates open May 1st I believe.
