Possesion of a hoax device a criminal offense?

It was far more asinine that "art" as she suggested. Not acceptable behavior in todays society, examples should be made so this is not repeated.

Even so.... come on! You can clearly tell that there is nothing hooked up to that board except LED's and a battery.

And you can see under the sweatshirt and know for certain that there are no wires running from the circuit board and concealed under her clothing? X-Ray vision, or those X-ray specs you could buy from ads in the back cover of comic books when I was a kid?

I'm not an electronics expert, but I've dealt a little bit with explosives. Have you ever seen any of the detonators used by FARC in Columbia? The point is that IEDs can look like anything. One popular IED detonating device for a device placed in a culvert under a road utilizes the circuitry from a car alarm as a detonator. The detonator from the device that was intercepted at the Canadian Border in 1999 was a similar circuit board with a digital watch soldered to it. That device was a VBIED composed of 118 pounds of ammonium nitrate, two plastic bags of sulfur, nitroglycerin and 4 timing/detonating devices that looked similar to what the girl had on her sweatshirt.

Are you ready to take the chance that it wasn't a bomb? Do you know for sure what every IED known to man looks like? I sure wish I was as certain about it as you are.

man and all of ya missed one VERY important detail in the story above........ she was carrying play doh in her hands as well as wearing the junk on her shirt.......

The shirt alone especially with the words "charge me up" on the back I would combine with her attitude and manner of carryin herself and say young girl thinkin she's bein cute (I might still insist on watchin her undress......... nothin to do with security though <JK>) however add in her carryin a plastic like substance in her hands and she's elevated herself from bein "cute" wearin a shirt with a duel implication of sexual and electrical depending on your interpretation (ie the statement on the back "CHARGE ME UP" implying one thing then ya see the front which transfers it to an electrical relationship as if she is an electric powered "toy" or plaything etc..) now she is lookin down the barrel of a .45 simply due to the play doh addition to the image.......

I sure hope THR members won't be drawin down on cute 19 year old girls for wearing a shirt with the rear message and an accompanying "graphic" on the front just cause it "could be" ya gotta look at the ENTIRE picture, as she approaches

hmmmm blinky lights, she's smiling, does not appear anciouse or nervous etc...

walking away

hmmmm "CHARGE ME UP" she's either a flirt or creating the image that she is robotic etc...

go on with life.......

BTW, some of ya'll better be particularily alert to some of the newer LED lighted jewlery being worn today....... could mean that person actually has a bomb inserted into a body cavity, the thread like wire hidden under her hair is probably a combination antanae and indicator lead when the ear rings go out or stop blinking the bomb inside her body will detonate ;) the most common location such jewlery will be seen is...... Malls, swap meets carnivals pretty much anyplace large numbers of people might gather

"With an IQ to get into MIT you would think was smart enough not to pull a stunt like this."

The question is, does she have the IQ to get out of MIT? Right now I'm voting no.

i've worked at a number of colleges

and it never ceases to amaze me how dumb college kids are second only to the arrogance. and i'm guessing we have a large number of them that post here. the funniset thing is the belief that education trunps experience course if all i had was one i'd fervently wanna believe in it too. this kid woulda got rendered inert if i saw her unless she very quickly was sucessful in convincing me she was harmless

"With an IQ to get into MIT you would think was smart enough not to pull a stunt like this."

Remember, IQ and common sense have no correlation whatsoever.

I'm sure MIT will be happy to bestow a degree upon this worthy student.

Will any employer hire her? Of course not.

She will end up teaching at MIT, perpetuating the stupidity.

cassandrasdaddy, guess that would be WHY colleges ban guns then huh? Lets see electronics major carryin box with wires and blinky lights...... Cassandrasdaddy draws and fires killing the student who is bringing in his class assignment.........

Ya gotta look at the ENTIRE picture, if your willing to shoot someone over a simple T-Shirt with no further info then I guess that would be what the Antis would have a field day over huh?

A responsible armed citizen is going to look further than just a circuit board on shirt which in itself says if this is a bomber its one thats really dumb to advertise intentions by use of a very conspicuous device drawing attention to themselves........ first clue ya needa stand down and look at more details such as attitude etc.. before ya even think of confronting that person....... a bomber will generally do everything possible to be INVISIBLE so that they can make it to an area to cause the most damage they do not want to be stopped and questioned when they are hardly within range of the target.......

Perhaps it's relevant that in January Boston and ten other cities had electronic devices planted in public places as part of a "guerilla marketing campaign" for a Cartoon Network show. The city seems to have overreacted then too, also to the amusement of the funloving people who were arrested for doing it. Here's a link, with photos and a video.

The lesson is clear. Do not call the police to report any odd looking electronic devices you spot in public places. Assume that they are either guerilla marketing devices or performance art, smile appreciatively, and continue on your way.

Otherwise people will say you're a silly billy.

ahhhh there where experience ruins my day everytime. see in my experience folks don't always act sensibl. in fact theworst threats in my life were anything but sensible/ old man i worked for used to say "no telling what a crazy person will do" but then again you might have had a lotta different experiences in your years

I would say, This young lady achieved the desired reaction, although probably not the magnitude expected. I know the news makes quite a few "mistakes" aka spin, so I am not inclined to take their word for it entirely, but with the information I have, I would say the police acted appropriately. This isn't exactly that light up christmas sweater you have to wear around gramma, this looks like it, along with the playdoh was intended to look like a comically fake bomb, but the officers weren't in on the joke, and after all, what is the worst that could happen if they didn't stop her?:uhoh:. She should thank god her stupidity wasn't fatal, and merely won her a nomination for the 2007 darwin awards.

I am not an electronics expert, and have never seen a bomb other than the TV or movies, but I found this pic to give me an idea of what the last confirmed real bomb that someone tried to sneak through an airport looked like. Guess I REALLY don't know what they look like.

"...possesion(sic) of a hoax device?..." Holding up a bank with your finger in a pocket is still armed robbery in most places.

Hoax device? she made a fake bomb to play a public prank that ended as it should have. I wonder if she is going to have some "political" message for us to try and turn her stupidity into fake heroism after the charges are dropped. "My performing art was designed to show how mr. Bush has destroyed the inncocence of youth" or something like that.

I did find what an actual HOAX device (not intended to cause panic) looks like:)

Allucard, exactly....... (in refferance to the shoe) very well concealed isn't it? not out in plain sight were it will get the bomber questioned BEFORE the bomber can reach the target.....

ya see regardless of crazy (suicide bomber pretty much denotes something isn't working upstairs) all have one thing in common CONCEALING THAT THEY HAVE A BOMB..... ya see that is ALWAYS a constant, bank robberies by bomb threat used to be very popular, but they ALWAYS conceal the bomb until they get to the target in that case the teller.........

if its out in the open then odds are its not real, even in a combat zone like Iraq or isreal suicide bombers still try to CONCEAL the bomb in order to reach the target before being shot down by soldiers or police etc... its a very dependable constant, sure ya might wanna use caution with the lil girl, but ya EVALUATE the suspicious individual before ya blow their brains out...... ya look at the entire image starting with the fact that the item is far from concealed.... the steps they will go to in order to conceal a bomb is why its so hard to spot em and EXACTLY why LE are trained (or supposed to be) to look at body language, dress, atitude, how the suspect carries him/her self etc... because bombers do not wear signs saying "I AM A SUICIDE BOMBER, I WISH TO KILL AT LEAST 100 PEOPLE" on their backs or ........ their chests

Spent a number of years with uncle sam teaching folks how to spot a potential threat in an urban environment, and because bombers CONCEAL all traces or attempt to at least of a bomb and their intentions its more important to look at body language, attitude etc.... a blinking set of LEDs between a girls breast would NEVER get any of my students to open fire they would deffinetly be LOOKING at her (never had anyone who was gay in the class at least not that I was aware of anyway) as usually such gimmicks used in apperal by females is generally with the intention of drawing attention to a physical attribute...... But it would seem many here are void of the normal male reactions to a woman trying to draw attention to her chest area.......... some lesser techniques are the use of slogans etc.. placed directly across the breasts usually in a font size that forces ya to make it obvious ya are looking...... Another technique is the use of bras or lack of to get nature to draw your attention to this area of the females anatomy.....

Gee some of ya might wanna go stand in front of a mirror and repeat "teenage girls tend to try to draw attention from males" at least 500 times

Anyone dumb enough to wear something that could be mistaken for a bomb into an airport should expect a response like that. And yes, if she had failed to comply and an officer hand put one through her brain box, it would have been a tragedy, but one that she brought on herself...it would have been suicide as surely as if she had placed the gun barrel against the roof of her mouth and pressed the trigger herself.

Can you give me an example of anything that could *not* be mistaken for a bomb by the Boston police? They thrive on creating a massive overreaction to anything unusual and then claiming it was a bomb threat. Remember when they recently went ape**** and shut down half the city over a LiteBrite toy?

If I could not avoid Boston, and Logan airport in particular, I would do everything I could to be invisible; blend into the crowd and and not be noticed. But 19 year old kids are not that wise yet, no matter how smart they are. (Nor should they be.)

Even Kentucky Fried Chicken as picked up on propensity the mass hysteria these days -- not just in Boston -- with one of their new commercials ("Luann has a knife!!!")

such a narrow view

ya see regardless of crazy (suicide bomber pretty much denotes something isn't working upstairs) all have one thing in common CONCEALING THAT THEY HAVE A BOMB..... ya see that is ALWAYS a constant, bank robberies by bomb threat used to be very popular, but they ALWAYS conceal the bomb until they get to the target in that case the teller.........

you know one of the signs of youth? as well as quantitative lesser experience? use of absolutes and definitives like always and never older i get more i see less inclined i am to postulate (or posture) like that. and as this poses a great example lets start with the kamikazee pilots were they crazy? or just from a culture and type of devotion you are incapable of fathoming? while i hate the results i have a grudging respect and appreciation for commitment and devotion to a cause that can get a man to die for it. no matter whether hes one of the good guys

and did you scroll up to see the pizza guy bomber? another good reason to steer clear of words like always
it was a painfl lesson for me to learn still get tail bit but not near as often as i used to

Going back to the early days of hijackings and bombs on board planes, long before 9/11: Such security as there has been has had no sense of humor whatsoever. None. No jokes about bombs; even innocent comments about how a movie or stage play "bombed" has gotten people in trouble.

Why is anybody surprised by the reaction, or even the amount of reaction, to this foolish gal's stunt?

It doesn't matter if any of us think the reaction was called for. That sort of reaction has been happening in airports and is gonna continue to happen in airports. It's not gonna change, no matter how much huffing and puffing there is on the Internet.

Around airports, folks get busted for stupid. Been that way for over thirty years, but it seems that some folks just don't get the word. Shame on 'em.

Well, that red-paper tube marked "TNT" with a fuse in it would probably get a laugh from me. But I sure wouldn't expect the cops or the general public to laugh along.

ALWAYS??? It's always a constant. No nutcase ever blew anything up and didn't conceal the bomb?

If you did, then you must know that not everyone who commits an act of terrorism is a terrorist.

Criminals
Crusaders
Crazies

Are the three groups that commit terroristic acts.

When you can guarantee me that some crazie wouldn't do that, then I'll say you're right.

sure ya might wanna use caution with the lil girl, but ya EVALUATE the suspicious individual before ya blow their brains out......

Whose brains were blown out? And just how were they supposed to evaluate the situation other then how they did?

Gee some of ya might wanna go stand in front of a mirror and repeat "teenage girls tend to try to draw attention from males" at least 500 times

And some might pull their heads out of the sand, look in the mirror and tell yourself, the next attack may not look like the last attack, it may look like nothing we've ever seen before.

The cops reacted exactly the way they should and had she not complied should have been shot. Read on and I'll explain why...

I'm an electronics technician that's worked a lot in the past with breadboards. I've also built a few pyrotechnic circuits for high power rocketry that were designed to ignite charges based on time, barometric pressure and a whole lot of other parameters used to deploy parachutes, streamers, etc. Many of these devices take very few components, are incredibly tiny and would take someone with some electronics expertise to examine the components and any integrated circuits (electronic chips) UNDER MAGNIFICATION to determine if the circuits were something sinister or benign.

The cop on the beat isn't a bomb tech nor is he an electronic technician. Here is some young girl wearing an electronic device on a breadboard connected to a battery sitting in an airport playing with a clayish looking substance. What would YOU do???

I guess some of you folks probably think the Shoe bomber was simply burning off a stray thread on his shoelace when government agents ripped off his Nikes and replaced them with explosive laden Adidas before other passengers pummeled him.
Wearing something like this on a shirt was monumentally stupid.

I think this speaks for itself, the threat is real.
An estimated 50 female suicide bombers since the 1980's I read elsewhere.
Wake up people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_suicide_bomber

Though the majority of suicide bombers have been male, female suicide bombers have carried out a number of attacks since 1985.

The first known suicide attack by a woman was carried out in Lebanon on April 9, 1985. Sana'a Mehaidli, a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), detonated an explosive-laden vehicle, which killed two Israeli soldiers and injured two more. Since then, female suicide bombers have been employed in several conflicts, by a variety of organizations, against both military and civilian targets:

Women of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), or Tamil Tigers, have perpetrated 30–40% of the organization's suicide bombings, which number more than 200. Thenmuli Rajaratnam (also known as Dhanu), who assassinated Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, is the best-known of these bombers.
The Chechen shahidkas have attacked Russian troops in Chechnya and Russian civilians elsewhere, e.g. in the Moscow theater hostage crisis.
During the Lebanese Civil War, female SSNP members bombed Israeli troops, militias such as the South Lebanon Army, and Lebanese civilians.
In the Al-Aqsa Intifada, women of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Hamas have bombed Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Members of the Iraqi insurgency have set off suicide bombs.
Women of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have carried out suicide bombings primarily against Turkish Armed Forces, in some cases strapping explosives to their abdomen in order to simulate pregnancy

Next time a print on a T-shirt of a bomb or gun will get you shot. ***

Waiting till the holidays when great aunt Martha goes to the airport with her blinkey light Christmas tree pin on her sweater. She's hard of hearing so I expect two COM and one in the head when she doesn't hear the TSA JBTs telling her to freeze. Heaven forbid she might have a bomb.
