Hey guys,
Ive been wanting to get a springfield M1A for a while. Most of my shooting is fairly casual since I'm 14, and usually involves going to the range or when we go up to Lake Pillsbury, hiking around and blasting things (squirrels, birds, logs, whatever looks fun).

One of my dad's friends at the police department has offered to sell us his M1A national match with a muzzlebreak (not the flash suppressor), here are the options that he offered:

1. M1A National Match + 7 20rd Magazines-$1500

2. M1A National Match + 7 20rd Magazines + UTG Tri-Rail and Larue quick-detach mount for optics-$1680

3. M1A National Match + 7 20rd Magazines + UTG Tri-Rail and Larue quick-detach mount for optics + Bushnell 10x scope-$1850

4. M1A National Match + 7 20rd Magazines + UTG Tri-Rail and Larue quick-detach mount for optics + Leupold Vari X-III 3.5-10x, duplex reticle, target turrets with 1/4 MOA adjustments-$2000

Do you guys think these are fair? Which one would you go for? I'm considering the one with the leupold myself. It seems really good.

I am older and probably more boring than you ( :p ) , but I'd go for the bare bones option. They have good iron sights, and if I wanted to add stuff later I could get the exact stuff I like instead of the stuff someone else likes/got.

Well, see, the advantage to the package W/the leupold is that it is a GREAT price for that scope, and I don't necessarily need to put it on the M1a.

All of those accessories are not really worth it except for the larue. The others are cheap (with the exception of the vari x III which is old and only as good as a new vx-II). I say buy just the rifle and see if you cant get a deal on the quick detatch mount as well.

Alright, maybe option two would be good in that case. Any other opinions?

Ahh yes, troy. Ive looked at their stuff, not really my style. Just looking for more of a normal style handguard really, don't really like the one that he has on it.

First I would see what kind of use the above mentioned rifles have been subjected to..Why they want to sell them? I can get a NEW SA NM for about $1650.

2nd..Those birds and squirrels you are "Blasting" you are eating? My dad caught me shooting starlings off the bird feeder when I was a couple years younger than you. Guess what I had for dinner that night? Yum..kinda tasted like a cross between liver and woodcock..

Sometimes, sometimes we use them for bait and such.

My dads friend bought the rifle about 10 years ago from a dealer in our city that caters almost primarily to police. He has since only used it for a little bit of range shooting. I would guess he has fired less than 500 rounds out of it. Back when he got it, he was still w/the PD so he shot his pistols and his AR more, and now he shoots his 300 wsm mostly. So I doubt its seen a bunch of use. I actually got to shoot it at the range. Dad was able to keep about 5 shots or so within an inch at 100 yards with irons, I was a little more wide :D

Thanks!

I found a stock that I may buy for it too, the USGI style with the slope-up about 3 inches after the magazine. Not sure if you guys know what I mean, probably not describing it well, but I don't like the commercial wooden stocks.

please know that in California you or your dad may be in violation of the law by accepting 20 rd magazines for personal use even if he is a police officer. and the cop selling them may be in legal trouble for selling them. other than that, get option 1. stay safe and legal

We're aware of the cal gun laws. In Cal, first off magazine laws aren't regulated, its not like he has to hand them over at the transfer and they get registered or anything. We own a bunch of magazines that can hold over 10 rounds. As far as I know, for an LEO, it is legal to purchase them including for personal use.

I'm not worried about the magazines honestly, just curious as to what is a better deal.

# 1 seems the better deal. please go to calguns.net and post your question you will get the truth there as well.

and no he cant just hand you assembled 20 round mags for personal use just becuase hes LE. but you do whatever you want
