I will post pictures when I get them developed.

I received the 16 Socom Wedsday. I was so excited that I could hardly sleep. Inital impressions were wow, then WOW.

I shot a prototype at the Memphis Springfield Challenge last September, and have wanted this thing ever since. I remember throwing a triple tap at a three hundred yeard target and hearing the steel after the shot noise went away. Bang, Bang. Bang...pause...tink, tink, tink!

The rifle has been changed a little since then, probably based on the reviews- most people love the rifle, but hated the original spec'ed sight. It was a big XS tritium sight set inside a chunck of metal looking like the Skylon in toronoto or the pace needle in Seattle, inside of a ghost ring. I noticed was the lack of the big XS ball sight that was on the proto and in the SWAT magazine write up. That sight, while I liked it, got hammered in the press. They now have an XS post with std M1A sights in back opend up a bit from the 1/16 aperature originally present.

The first thing I did was disassemble it and lube it up. Standard M1A break down and lube points, in fact, besides the sight and the barrel with break, you can't tell this is not an M1A.

I hand cycled it a thousand times, I loaded rounds from slide lock and checked the lock and the extract and eject, all worked well.

Making sure it was unloaded, I cleared my house a couple of times and sliced the pie to get the bad guy hiding in the shower- I am divorced and now I get to play in the house. I shut the door to the bathroom and turned off the lights and imagined the night fight I would win thanks to my glow sight. ;)

I have no tools for measuring trigger pull, but think it is around six pounds, minimal take up and then breaks cleanly- not as smooth as my 1911, but no perceived creep (mush).

At the range I started off with a one round mag and fired, the gun did not blow up and the action locked back, good. I did not notice the fire ball one would expect from the smaller barrel. The brake is a loudspeaker.

I then followed the instructions on zeroing using Winchester CXP 180 gr. At one hundred yards off bags, using the irons, I got 1.5" five shot group. A little high and a little left- each click really close to an inch adjustment at a 100 yards- making the adjustments as I ran out of ammo. I switched to a buddy's surp and got the elevation, but was way right. A couple of more mags I was still all over the place. I am not the most comfortable with these sights as I am not familiar with them yet. I stopped playing with the sights and shot until I started grouping - 3 - 4" groups, but I get that with anything I shoot.

When I started to get really comfortable and concentrated on the shot I went back to 1.5 - 2" groups at 100m. I need advice on how to maintain a sight picture from shot to shot.- Any volunteers?

It was a bright hot day so I did not really notice flash, and the noise, while huge was not any louder than my buddy's 16" AR-10. I have one SA 20 rounder and a couple of cheapies I bought off ebay- every one worked fine when I was shooting.

The only hiccup in the guns performance was pulling the trigger, hearing it hit, and nothing happening on the second or third round of the day. I ejected and reinserted (after noticing there was no primer strike) and bang it went. Which is funny,. because I have not seen primer strikes this deep in anything. I compared it to my friends AR10 who had little dimples (also a match trigger) to mine that had manly, but clean primer dents.

Allowing friends to shoot it...
I have a buddy that was more concerned with watching impact point more than shooting. He had one premature lock back; looking at him, the gun was free cycling as he did not maintain the mount through the shot. I will attribute it to that- this was about round 30.

I tried a double or tap or two and the gun while more recoil than my AR did not flip or thump as hard as I anticipated it would.

I bought this gun for the intent of using a bigger caliber at our monthly Tac Rifle Shoots (everybody has an AR, I wanted to be different).

I am thinking about a scout scope or a Aimpoint ML2-2X as the sights are quick enough to eschew a dot, but something to help me see to 150 yards would be nice as we do shoot long steel at times. I think I can be competetive with this set up- won't beat the pros anytime soon, but shooting this toy will make it more fun.

For those who are die hard fans of the M1A, or the FAL, or the AR/AK/SKS, this rifles offers a unique choice for carbine sized big bores. I am sure that there are flaws, but I am too much in love to see them right now- other than the non chrome bore. SA should anticipated the use of this rifle is lots of rounds. They say that this barrel should last 7000 rounds with proper care. I am hoping to shoot it out as quickly as possible (meaning I am shooting a lot) As Springfiled listened to the complaints on the sight, maybe they will listen to the desire for the bore.

I GIVE THIS PUPPY TWO SNAPPS UP AND ONE SNAP AROUND THE WORLD.

Apologies if this doesn't answer questions you have, post an I will reply. I promised SA and the distributor that I would be an embassidor for this rifle provided it worked when I got it- that is why I have it earlier than most.

BTW - The $%#er runs!!!

I will comment on the groups more when I get those pictures developed, but it is more me than the gun right now, so I am not a good source to base accuracy expectations and measurements from. Spitballs and rubberbands though, I could win the nationals...

Sweet! I'd like to have a 16" barrel, but I do love my full size M1A. I had an AR and I liked it, but I'm more fond of the M1 operation.

The only rifle I have ever owned and really shot is my AR- first 20 in A1 and then self made 16" super lite A4. It has always felt toyish- super duper deadly, but toyish- and the lenght of pull with the pistol grip conspire against being comfortable.

The standard M1A just fits me, the big fat stock fills my hands and my frame (I am 6'5"). It feels manly. I feel manly. I guess that whole penile substitution thing is true.

SA recommended 168 gr or lighter bullets in M1As & surplus M14s in their armorers course. Due to barrel twist and gas system operation.
What barrel twist is the SOCOM model?

Best I can do for now...

I can barely follow the first thread... I have edited for readablility.

On the trigger pull- the hammer fell, I heard the click, but no boom. Do not know what happened but it has not happened again.

Ohmigawd! It looks like the VC chopped down M-14. Dang if those guys didn't anticipate our wants.

so i don't know much about rifles, but would you consider it an all-around rifle, suitable for hunting, target shooting, competitions? would it a ok for 3-gun competitions?

Fit and Finish

As I said, the gun is really an M1A/4 whatever. The stock is a little thinner than the std walnut, birch. The black fiberglass is crinkled- meaning a paint level texture- kind of works for me, the comb is checkered like other rifles. I am a bigger framed person, so the M14 / A has always fit a little better than others. The bluing or finish is ever with no cometic flaws visible.

As far as usibility, I know the die hards like the longer barrel for long range knock down capabilities, but I will primarily use this for tac rifle and three guns. It does have more flip/ kick then my AR superlite with a mini Y, but I can follow shots up, the brake is a great thing. It seems a little front heavy, so standing and taking 50 shots may seem a little much right now, but I am used to either a 1911 or an AR. I will let you know next month after the first tac rifle I shoot how I did. I will shoot both the AR and the S16.

:p

The brake is integral to the rifle. I guess you can get it drilled or undrilled. It is definitely not a flash hider but so far I have not had problems with flash, but it is concussive, but.... for a 308 and a "lite" ;) rifle, the recoil is almost fun!

Thanks for the report!

You asked:

I was thinking I'd recommend shooting a Highpower match and getting some coaching if possible. Some great people that can help you improve your groups when 'off the sandbags'.
