Possible SBR and suppressor purchase

I have a AR lower. Thinking about buying a upper in 300 Whisper direct from SSK Industries. Barrel would be 10.5" with an integral suppressor. Manufacture takes only two months, but paperwork will probably take longer. Upper is only $1700...not that bad for what you're getting.

What steps do I need to take? "First do this, second do this..." would be great.

I'm under the impression that I need to voluntarily register the lower as a SBR first thing.

Obviously my first foray into this world.

You certainly could start the process for both at the same time rather than do one at a time since you are going to have to wait for a tax stamp for the upper anyway.

So, pay for the upper and start the transfer process there, meanwhile send in a Form 1 for the lower, get the lower engraved and wait.

Hopefully the tax stamps will come in close to the same time so you can enjoy your new toy, but who knows.

The specifics are, since you are buying an NFA firearm already built (the upper) you pay for it up front and the dealer starts your paper work for the transfer.

You will also be the manufacturer yourself on the lower, so you send in a Form 1 to "make" an NFA firearm.

Interesting...where do most people get an AR engraved? Also, what happens when you move? (I'm military...TX is where I'm at right now...not necessarily where I want to end up or where I'll be in a few years).

Just about any place can engrave it, personally I've used Orion with good results.

When you move you notify ATF in writing telling them you are moving and that's that, assuming your new state allows for ownership of the items.

When you say 10.5" with an integral suppressor, do you mean the whole deal is 10.5", or that the barrel is 10.5" and it has an integral after that? I ask because if you have a 10.5" barrel and 5.5" of suppressor, you'd only have to submit one form. If the whole thing is 10.5", TR hit it on the head.

I din't use my last name as the trust, I named it something like: "ABC Trust". So mine says ABC Trust Cornelius OR

I had it engraved locally for $25, the guy has experience (with NFA engraving) and it turned out great. No finish though, just bare AL, I rubbed some moly grease I had on hand in it. Heard good things about the refinishing prowess of the "sharpie" as well.

Even if the upper is 16" w/ suppressor, I think it is totally worth it to SBR an AR lower. Extremely versatile. Can get short 5.56 uppers, short .22 LR and pistol cal uppers, 6.8...

Great, that is the info I need! I will have the name of my trust shortened, as what my lawyer used for a default in the first draft will be very inconvenient to engrave.

Does it have to be "professional" like from the Orion-arms link, or can I use an electric pencil like Century appears to often do?

Generally, any gun manufactured, imported, or made on and after January, 2002 must have the manufacturers information engraved, cast, stamped by impression, at a minimum depth of .003" with a height no smaller than 1/16" on the frame, receiver, or barrel.

It's worth it to have it professionally done...even at $50. Google NFA engraving with your city and you might get lucky w/ someone local. That's how I found mine. A trophy shop engraver might butcher it if they aren't set up for it and experienced.

The engraving requirement, is something I didn't know about and am now further confused. I'm starting with an existing functional firearm and want to "make" it into a short barreled rifle.


The instructions on my ATF Form 1 (5320.1) Revised September 2007 that I received from BATFE a couple of weeks ago state under instructions 2i:

"if an existing firearm or firearm receiver is used, the name and location of the original manufacturer of the weapon should be entered in Block 4(a)" and "if an existing firearm is being used in the making of the NFA weapon, and that firearm is serialized, the existing serial number should be used... and entered in Block 4(g)."

So where does any requirement for engraving come from in my case? The gun I'm starting with already has an original manufacturer engraving and serial number.

I'm just trying to do things right the first time, and avoid the expense and hassle of doing anything not actually required. If I have to engrave it, I don't really care what it looks like as long as it meets the legal requirements (0.003" depth and 1/16" character heights don't seem like rocket science).

you become the manufacturer of the short barreled rifle, or your trust does hence the need for engraving.

Yes, the AR semi-auto non-NFA rifle was made by ______ with serial # ____ at anytown USA.

You are the maker of the short barreled rifle, since it already has a serial number, all you have to do is add the SBR maker's (your) name, city and state.

If was a factory SBR no new engraving would be needed. If you were physically making the receiver (say from an 80% forging), then you would just pick your own SN plus name, city, state.
