Possible trade, want some thoughts

I am considering a trade for a S&W Mt Gun in 45 Colt, a 625-6 to be exact. I am trading my 4 3/4 Blackhawk flat top in 45 Colt/ACP for what I bought it (600) for plus six hundred dollars. I have another flat top in the same caliber.

Thoughts on the trade?

Since you already have another flat top in the same caliber, that sounds pretty good to me. That being said I am not up to the second on values of either gun.

But if I wanted to get a nice quality DA in .45C, that looks like a great opportunity.

[ETA: That convertible BH is worth somewhat more than $600 nowadays. I might see if the other party would take less cash, myself.]

I agree that the BH is worth more now, but I don't think they'd hold the MG while I tried to sell it. I also think the MG will sell before the weekend if they didn't hold it. They've only had it in the case a few days. I've only seen two MG's in any caliber the last few years, and I've been keeping my eye out.

Depends on how much you shoot; 45 ACP you can use large or small pistol primers; 45 Long Colt just large and sometimes hard to find.

Your Blackhawk plus $600, right?

Boy, to me that’s like $1300 for the S&W. I would be torn because I would love one of those Mountain Guns in .45 Colt. Since I haven’t physically seen one in a loooong time I would probably go for it, but I would try to get the price down.

That is with the price down some. They wouldn't go any lower since they just put it into the case. Like you, I haven't seen one in any caliber or even a 25 in a long time.

I paid around that for a 25-5 in recent times. It's not a horrible price...

Dealing with a big box store vs. a private individual changes the calculus a bit.

If I already had another flat top - I think I would go ahead and do it! 'Twould be interesting to see what their sticker price ends up being on your old BH...

I would do it, especially if I had a second of the gun I was trading away.

My only Mountain Gun is a 629-4 .44 Mag, sitting here with my standard 4 5/8” Blackhawk .45 Colt. (The etched “Mountain Gun” and “.44 Magnum” have faded off the barrel over the years :(.) The MG is a bit of a kicker with magnum loads, but with pleasant mid-magnum loads it isn’t bad.

Since it is an N frame I wouldn’t punish a .45 Colt MG with loads the Blackhawk can handle, but loads of decent power in .45 Colt are manageable in the MG without being awful to shoot. :)

A MG in .45 Colt and/or .41 Mag would be awesome additions to any revolver collection. Good luck getting that one.

Stay safe.

What is the condition of each? I was involved in buying/ selling vintage musical instruments for a long time. How much (or how little) revolvers have been used can greatly affect the numbers.

Both are in similar condition: finish is stainless with minimal scratches, lockup tight, no end shake, wonderful triggers. I do need to bring my measuring tools to measure the cylinder gap and throats, but will do that before I conclude the deal.

That is a difficult decision. I thought the -6 MG are all 45acp, not 45 Colt, I guess I'm mistaken. Considering you have a Flat-Top, if the you're comfortable with the cost, it might work well as an addition.

I have a S&W 625MG in .45LC and it is a terrific gun. I don't shoot it much, .45LC ammo is expensive, and reloading components can be hard to find (and I simply haven't started reloading yet* even though I do have all I need to get started). Still, when I do shoot it I love it, and it is a great looking gun.

I can't really say if you should trade or not, but you won't be sorry if you do pic up a .45LC S&W 625MG.

*EDIT:
I left out a word... I haven't started reloading for IT yet. I do reload .38 and .357mag and have for nearly 20 years.

I like the Smith MT Gun Series. Especially in .45 Colt.

The deal seems to be somewhat in Cabelas favor in my estimation. Have you considered selling the Ruger to a private party? FLAT TOP .45 Colts aren’t necessarily growing on trees either.

Smith for a ruger? Not me. May be there's something you're looking for beyond what you got but I doubt the 625 would be sitting there available if it was a sweetheart. Just my thinking.
I've been burned on s&w and left unsatisfied by their customer service. So, nope. I'd hold that blackhawk tight and let that mountain gun float on down the river.

not a trade for me, but i don’t reload 45lc. i have one ruger blackhawk 45lc/acp convertible. i rarely shoot 45lc out of it. if i had two, i would trade one for a ruger blackhawk 357/38/9mm convertible, which i already have. neither of my ruger convertibles will leave me before i leave this earth.

I would trade. I carry my .45 Colt MG far more often than I do my Ruger SA. They are really good firearms.
