Possible Wingmaster purchase

One other issue Manther.
There are so many used barrels and stocks available alone on GunBroker for 870's and else where that any changes you made to those replacement parts would be to them alone and in a matter of minutes the gun could have it's original parts put right back on.
My main issue for buying that particular gun was because of the nice condition for it's age and at that time the craftmanship in their making was first rate.
Those Ithaca's are great shotguns as well.

It will fit but since that is the 870 Express barrel it will be matte instead of Wingmaster blue.

If you get around to wanting that barrel threaded, I'll second the recommendation for Mike Orlen above. I just had an 870 barrel threaded by him. The work was beautiful, lightning-fast and very reasonably priced.

Hello friends and neighbors // I sounds like you have a plan, good luck finding the barrel or the perfect shotgun.

Here are the barrel codes for Remington.
Calling the 800 number with the serial number will date the reciever, these codes are for the barrels which can be changed.
I use it for a quick guide at the shows.

The search is half the fun...well maybe 1/3.

I called the gunshop with the wingmaster.

Here were the only numbers he could find on the barrel

cf7 (Left side)
rep m (Right side)

Also I asked him about the price and he said he'd only go down to $350.

a good thing about the quality we are talking about here with any of the guns mentioned above....
unless you just run over it w/steamroller, it will hold value pretty well. If you decide you don't like it for some reason...you can pretty much get your $$ back.

Manther if those letters he gave you on the barrel are correct then it means April of 1959was the build date.

April of 1959 // $350 ----do you want it enough-----you probably won't find another soon.
But a new 870 Express from Buds Guns is $301 delivered with 26" Ventilated rib and rem chokes. You still have the FFL transfer fee and such but I figured I'd throw it into the mix.

Is that $350 cash out the door or do you still pay tax and $5.00 ATF clearence fee.

Thanks for the date verify. Contents picture makes it look like there should be way more digits than just 3. That's $350 Plus tax.

I do have this urge to just go buy it, and not even goto the gun show. If it had a modified barrel there would be no question. Isn't modified the next step wider from full?

Yes Mod is more open than full.
I much prefer a mod choke in a 12 gauge but generally find myself using improved cylinder more while dove hunting.

Yes it does show a lot of numbers and I apologise for the poor quality.
The choke sizes are
Full ,
Improved Modified,
Modified ,
Improved Cylinder
Skeet
Cylinder

There are Xtra Full and Light skeet..Turkey but these are the most common.

My Dad has what I believe is an early 70s Wingmaster, and its truly a beatiful gun. The wood has some nice designs on it and a great glossy finish. Its a great gun and shoot very well. I have a 1300 Winchester, though, and I have absolutely loved it every time I have used it. Its been used on deer, dove, quail, duck, rabbit, and squirrel. With the WinChoke system, its a very versatile gun.

$350 Plus tax.
Around here that would equate to about $380 for what looks to be a very clean vintage Wingmaster.
$301 delivered with 26" Ventilated rib and rem chokes. You still have the FFL transfer fee and such but I figured I'd throw it into the mix.
Around here that would equal $321 a difference of $59. Expresses aren't Wingmasters. For the price of a "cheep date" I'd go vintage Wingmaster, but thats just me.

350+tax is pushing it.

its a decent deal, nothing AMAZING...id haggle for 350 OTD to be honest.

for reference I got a 1975 2 3/4" only for 225 OTD in similar condition...

I would do it for 350 OTD knowing I didn't get a world beating deal but I did get a gun well worth the money.

Manther if those letters he gave you on the barrel are correct then it means April of 1959was the build date.

For clarity, the barrel date code only relates to the barrel, and I have bought 870s with barrels that were decades off the date of the receiver. In this case, though, it could well be the original barrel. The only way to get a reliable date on the receiver is to call Remington at the number given above.

I think $350 is on the high side but if this is really clean when you see it in person, it's probably worth forgetting about whether you've dialed in the price to the closest $25. Life is short, older clean guns can be hard to find, and you honestly won't remember $50 a couple of months from now. Lots of people spend that much a week on coffee, even in 2010, and look where that winds up. Older Wingmasters are very nice - I might just do it if I were you.

I also think $350 + tax is bit high, but if its worth it to you, then go for it. They can be had for cheaper, but you have to look for them, be patient, and when you see them, you have to grab them up.

Like JNewell said, you probably won't remember that $50 in a few months, but you can be shooting that gun tomorrow if you want.

Yall are gonna laugh. I just bought the browning.

It was really clean. There's a tiny bit or debris here and there, but not a scratch on it.

The guy wanted $320, I said $250, he said $300, I said $300 plus a case, and a box of shells. He said $300 and a soft case. That's what I got.

It already has the threaded choke system. It has a full in it, but I can pick up a few more for less than $30. Its a fairly new looking and feeling gun. Everything feels tight. Kinda cool that it will be me breaking it in instead of someone else. If I really continue with shotgun sports, I can still look for some older classics later.

This is it.

Thanks, I like the feel of it. It feels a little heavier than the WM and the Ithaca. But I like where the safety is a lot better. Also I like having the choice to shoot 3" shells. The bottom feed bottom eject maybe a little weird but I have no established muscle memory yet. So as a new shooter it won't feel weird to me. Now I gotta look up how old it is.
