Possible Wingmaster purchase

Cool, glad others think it was a good decision. I was feeling a bit sketchy pulling the trigger. According to the BPS website it is a 2002. And I'm pretty sure its the hunter not the upland.

Hello friends and neighbors // Glad you found what works for you.

It looks like you are all set and that is a beautiful, versatile shotgun.
Enjoy and welcome to THR.

P.S.---If you find a 1950 (first year) Wingmaster you don't need please let me know.

Went to the range today and tried out the new gun for the first time. Went to Elm fork here in Dallas. http://www.elmfork.com That place was really cool. 460 acres of shooting ranges. People there were helpful and laid back. They set me up on a beginners trap. It was 104 degrees out there today. The gun was great, I shot 4 different brands of ammo out of it, and tried my modified, and improved cylinder chokes. I didn't get to pattern the gun because they were having a competition. I sucked at hitting the clays but got better towards the end when I started jumping on them sooner. Gonna try to get in two or three more practices before opening weekend. I shot at 90 clays. My front arm was getting tired towards the end. Figured out the gun needs to be cleaned and oiled. It didn't want to let go of a spent cartridge once. The guys working there oiled it up a little. Thanks for all the advice and help. Later -

Kudos for picking a good gun and getting out and practicing!
All too often folks pick up a gun and put it in the corner and just expect that they can use it for its intended purpose when the time comes. Practice makes perfect!

Thanks guys. Went to the range again. Got to pattern the gun this time. Started at 40 yards. Only had 7/12 and 8 .oz loads. The mod and ic chokes were sooo spread out at that range. Tried fiocchi, win, rem, and fed brands. I didn't notice much of a difference due to brand. The full had the best looking pattern at 40 yds. At 30 yards the ic began to look acceptable. Mod looked good and full looked fairly tight. At 25 yards they all looked lethal. Went back to the trap area and had them put it on ata this time instead of just straight. I was significantly better this week. I can load 4 shots in my gun at once and several times I went 4 for 4. I started off with the full choke, and did the second half of 50 shots with mod. I did better with mod but not tons better. Sadly I might have been able to buy that wingmaster and do just fine with full choke. A lesson one just has to learn on his own I guess. Bought a red head 12 gauge cleaning kit, rem oil and hoppes cleaning fluid from bass pro for $22. Found some good YouTube vids and picture threads on breaking down the bps. I noticed it's he'll trying to get the trigger assembly back in. I'm debating on not removing it. Academy has 7 1/2 Winchester on sale for $3.99 a box, $40 a case. I'm thinking about buying that for opening weekend. Bad or good idea?

Also my hunting partners are bringing decoys. There are at least two kinds, motorized from bass pro. My buddies say those actually do work. But they cost $50 at bass pro. Then there is the 5 pack for $15 at academy. I think they go on limbs and wires. Is the $50 worth it? I bought one of those $40 seats with a back rest and small cooler inside that is just barely bigger than a 5 gallon bucket. I'm also shopping around for vests. Browning makes a mesh vest with the pad already included that seems nice but it's $80... I'm slightly partial to browning but I would like to hear what vest you guys like. (it's hot as he'll in Texas btw).

Manther I bought a case of the Winchester #8 yesterday myself.
For $40.00 I just might go back today and buy another case.
It works just fine on doves.
Never used decoys for doves as they are thick as can be in south Texas in the evening while staking out a cattle tank under the shade of a Mesquite tree.

wish i could find some shotgun ammunition for 3.99 a box, cheapest here 7.50 a box for federal game loads, even estate is 8.00 and 9.00 a box ,i thought that was the cheaper stuff.short supply of 12 guage, lots a 20.i see a slew of doves by the railroad tracks at my dad"s place, hmmm.

Broken,if you have no low priced stores near by then go online and order the ammo.
I just ordered several boxes of various buck shot and slugs from Midway and it was fairly weighty and the shipping only amounted to ten bucks.

I'm kinda iffy on the decoys also. But the folks I'm going with have hunted there before. I think this first year I'm gonna skip the decoys though. I'll probably buy the academy ammo. Someone tried to send me a link to a sale walmart is having but the link was broken. Might stop by there first.

I ended up getting the sale at academy. Theirs was ten boxes for $40, and walmarts deal was only 4 for $20.

chokes

manther,

I seem to recall you saying this is your first shotgun. Doves at 40 yards can be quite challenging. Much more challenging than trap targets, which fly straight once they leave the trap.

I suggest you use the mod choke, or even the IC. First, if the birds come in close, the full choke will be too much choke. It will either give you too small a pattern or will tear the birds up. IC is good to about 30 yards, maybe farther. Mod is a good choke for doves.

Others might agree or disagree.

Danny

But Mike Yardley makes it look so easy... nah JK good point Danny. I'll probably start off with mod, and see how I do.
