Here's an old image done at low resolution:

Here's the new image done at much higher resolution:

Any constructive suggestions before I add it to my web site?

Nice, nice lighting ... intrigued to know the source? Multiple brolly flash?? High intensity tungsten and reflectors??

Anyways ... much as I like the newer one . and yeah I agree .. Mom's hand off the gun .... my vote (sorry!) has to go for the ''old'' one ... it is more subtle ... and frankly .... it works.

No contest IMO .. even allowing for all the effort put in to #2.

yep, that's what was bugging me about it, if you put the moms hand down by the side, you can then crop it tightly like the original.

For the gun culture both phots work. If the intent is to sway anti's I would pick the second photo with the following changes: Take the hand off the gun and place on hip nearby. Take the other hand and put in a "pointed finger" pose like the mother is warning off a bad guy, but would rather not shoot.
But,...
The most visual photo would be a mother over a bleeding child, with the mother holding a smoking gun and a scummy loking bad guy falling with weapons (knife, pipe, etc) and with a police officer in the background writing up a ticket for a parked car.

Although both are great ,
I really really like the subtle , but very effective way the gun is indicated by a father in the first one.

Having a Mom in the second sends perhaps two messages, the obvious is the trust of parents, the other is of a mom taking additional steps for herself and children. Agree hand off gun.

Mom more subtle with gun, getting a child out of a car seat, pushing child whilst in grocery basket, attending a child's recital, ball game, getting shoes...restaurant...

Child using cover dialing 911, Mom covering a BG, broken door , busted lock in pic...situation handled as referred to by above post

Knowing that particular child, if trouble struck, she'd be charging with one of Daddy's bayonets or swords, while Mommy tried to draw fast enough to provide covering fire for her daughter! :D

The dad pic is my second favorite of all time. (#1 being "The original carry permit")

Part of the reason I liked it was the simple, matter of fact presence of the handgun. It was simply....present, without being a cause for commotion on anyone's part, and was not the primary focus of the scene.

The new version, with mom's hand on the gun, puts too much emphasis on the gun itself. A valid need to grasp the pistol, presumably preliminary to drawing it clashes with the unconcerned expression of the child and the mom's warm touch.

I like the top one. My problem with the bottom is the same as your first take on the top shot: The little girl looks scared or worried.

In the top shot, the little girl looks confident and happy.

(I also like the subtle presentation of the gun on top, and dislike mom's hand on the gun on the bottom).

In conclusion: Don't mess with perfection!

Another vote for #1. In my opinion this is one of your masterpieces! It's been on my fridge since I found it.

Perhaps a similar picture with a woman and maybe a matched set in addition.

Keep 'em coming!

I plan on re-shooting the photos and making the new poster more like the old one, but higher resolution.

What about the child cowering behind the adult with the adult in a protective posture. just my two pennies

The original poster is my all time favorite Oleg poster. It's it perfect IMHO.

The magical combination of the innocence of the child, the comforting hands of the parent and the subtle presence of the weapon combine to make it a classic.

The new one isn't as stong. For one thing if the woman is worried enough to put her hand on her weapn the child should already be shielded behind her.

I say keep mom's hand right where it is.

Anti's need to visualize the reality that a woman and a mother, equipped with firearm,
really is able to defender herself and her children effectively, even against multiple bad guys.

hillbilly

if the photo is supposed to make the viewer think the mother/daughter are in danger, perhaps the photo could be taken from the side.
the child stands behind the mother.
a BG is approaching with a knife.
the mother is holding right hand out in a 'stop' gesture with left hand on the gun.
see attached.
