GRAND VALLEY RESIDENTS ASKED FOR OPINIONS, SUPPORT FOR SHOOTING COMPLEX
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Enthusiasm continues to grow for Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s proposal to build a state-of-the-art shooting and education complex in the Grand Valley. To help gauge the extent of the public’s support, agency officials are encouraging everyone to take an online survey and provide useful information as the project progresses.

The advanced shooting complex will be located approximately three miles east of Palisade on property currently owned by Xcel and the Snowcap Coal Company, near the site of Xcel’s decommissioned power plant at Cameo.
"We have received support and assistance from a variety of sources, including the Town of Palisade and Mesa County," said District Wildlife manager Frank McGee. "However, citizen’s input is very important and we urge everyone to take a few minutes to fill out the survey."
McGee adds that he has already heard from several private citizens who have expressed support for the range.
Western Colorado currently lacks a high-end shooting complex like the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Arizona, which the proposed range will emulate. The new complex will be unique in western Colorado, and provides facilities that will support a variety of educational and shooting activities, including rifle and pistol ranges of varying distances, trap shooting and archery.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials add that the complex will be able to support large-scale national and international shooting competitions, providing a significant economic boost to local communities.
“This will also be an excellent place to hold our hunter education courses, or our various 101 hunting clinics,” continued McGee. “In addition, law enforcement agencies will appreciate having an advanced training facility unlike any other in the west slope, which is a significant benefit to our communities.”
Wildlife officials say shooting sports add $27.8 billion dollars to the U.S. economy and sportsmen contribute $2.9 billion every year for conservation, including $4.95 billion in annual federal tax revenue.
“Colorado Parks and Wildlife is dedicated to bringing the public the best facilities we can provide for shooting competitions, training, education and recreation,” said Northwest Regional Manager Ron Velarde. "The public has expressed the need for a complex like this, and we need everyone’s support to help us make this a reality.”
