Does anyone know what the story is with Potomac Arms?
I braved the snow today to travel there and check out their selection of guns. As usual, they had a lot of old guns, and in particular, they had a decent assortment of used Colt 1911s (which is why I went there). However, many of the displays seemed virtually empty, their usual supply of mil surplus ammo in odd calibers was empty, and their attitude was especially bad (I am looking at an early Model 70 Gold Cup and ask to break the gun down, the guy pauses, looks at me like I am crazy, and then says absolutely no)t. On top of that, when I inquired about new Colts they told me that Colt is not in the consumer market anymore - only selling a few guns from parts lying around the shop - and that generally, Potomac Arms is looking to stop selling new firearms. Huh!!!!
I walked away from that guy and then found another salesman who actually took the Gold Cup apart - glad I did as the barrel bushing and pin were shot and there was some evidence of what looked like rust on the handle (though I don't know for sure since they wouldn't take the grips off). That, of course was the Colt in the best condition. The others left a whole lot to be desired and weren't exactly attractively priced. Plus, they wouldn't negotiate on the price - and this is for an old used gun.
I hadn't been there in a couple of years (my father bought a Henry golden boy from them a couple of years ago - right when Henry re-emerged as a popular brand) and hadn't been back since then.
Anyone have a clue as to whats going on with them?
