I'm setting up a Lee Classic Turret (thanks to Fulleffect1911) to load .223 plinking ammo for my AR.

What power and primer combinations do you guys go with? I plan on buying the cheapest 55g fmj's I can find at the time.

The press has the Pro Auto Disk and double disk kit, and I'd like the powder to meter well through what ever disk combination I have as well.

Thanks

For 55s, H335 is well regarded both for its perforamnce and because it meters extremely well. Also Win 748...after those, probably BL-C(2) and then Varget, Reloader 15, A2230, A2460 but those perform better w heavier bullets. Rumors abound on the 'net about WSR primers piercing in 223 altho I've never seen it. Rem 7 1/2 and CCI 400 are frequently cited as good choices.

24.8-25.3g H4895 with Hornaday 55g FMJ BT and either CCI or WSR primers work well for me.

25.-25.5g of A2230 with 55gr FMJ BT has been working good in my armalite AR.Meters good.

I use A2230 in my 16" AR and A2460 in my 24" AR. Both meter well thru the double disk on the Lee.
Winchester primers have worked great in my guns but, as was mentioned, there are reports/rumors of problems in some ARs. CCI #41 primers are designed for AR type firing pins. I'm planning on giving them a try as well.

I think I'm going to give the A2230 and Rem 7 1/2 primers a try.

It may be a while, but I'l give a range report when I get one!!!!

Thanks for all of your comments.

26g Varget 55g Hornady vmax WSR primer. 3050fps -+ 20" BBL. Semi auto load only to hot for a bolt gun.

If you want to plink get some hornady 55g soft point from midway use the same load as above.

How would a load be "too hot for a bolt gun"? I'm not aware that .223 semiautos are in general stronger than bolt-actions. I would think the reverse, actually, since so many .223 bolt actions are built using the same action that is used for .308.
