I have been working on a old 1942 German Mauser. I only have found a few rounds left from the last time it was fired, ~ 1973. So the ammo has some age on it.
Going through it found indications that the powder is going bad. This is the Fed 170gr SP. The center round on the right clip of 5, pulled down. This had spherical powder inside. If you look closely there is 1 piece of powder stuck to where the corrosion is. The extruded/tubular powder did more pitting than any thing else, with some breaking through the surface.
I also scrounging around I found 3 pieces of fired mil brass. 2 of these had pierced primers. If I'm reading the head stamp correctly this is 1938 ammo?
Since these had blown primers I decided to break the Mil ammo down. What I found was a little surprising. The powder used is a large flake powder, it was stuck throughout the case. If I'm reading the head stamp correctly this is 1938 ammo?
All this ammo is 50+ yrs old. Surprisingly the Mil ammo does not show any major problems on the outside of the brass. But when you look inside tit's really bad.
I was unable to get any odor from these small samples. Once I pulled the bullet (cam lock, press puller) by the time I got the cartridge out of the shell holder there was no smell I could detect.
I have some video I shot but apparently it's in a QT (.mov) format that is not up loadable. I'm running on a Mac.
