When loading a 405gr bullet in a 45-70 case I measures out 65 grains of Goex by weight which gives me the OAL and about .030 compression that I am looking for.

My question is when I load a different bullet, in my case 500gr which seats deeper do I just compress the powder more or put leSs powder in the case?

I know with smokeless heavier bullets take less powder does BP work the same way?

Sorry for all the basic questions, I thought I had the details worked out but am coming up with new questions as I move along in the process.

Thanks daveinvegas, I had read that tread but must have missed part about BP being so forgiving. Looks like you and I are taking the BP cartidge loading plunge at the same time just a slightly different route.

I never thought of paper patching, let me know how it works for you. Oversized bullets in soft alloy are hard to find, if it turn out that I need a .462 bullet to work well in my gun I may look at paper patching. I am hoping my .459 30:1 lead bullets will jump up to the bore.

I don't want to cast at least not at this point.
