powder for the 40

When I start to reload my springfield 4o I will be using whats left of power pistol that will be for jacked, now unique for lead when the PP is gone whats another good powder?.

I like Bullseye for up to 165 grain bullets and AutoComp or HS-6 for anything heavier.

+1 on the AA#5! After many years of using win 231 I found AA#5 and will never go back. It meters like water and my Glock 22 seems to love 6gr with a 155lswc. YMMV

Accurate No.7 for lead and Hodgdon Universal for jacketed.

Too many kaboom stories with No.5 for my taste - No.7 fills the case, clean, meters, and doesn't have the big fireballs like No.5.

I am a long time fan of Longshot for .40, 9mm, and 38 spcl. with jacketed bullets. HS6 isn't bad either.

unique works well for me, but I prefer accurate powders #5 & #7 for great metering.

I tested 4 powders for my Glock 23. Unique, AA#5, Power Pistol, and Winchester Super Field WSF using 165 jacketed HP's and FMJ's plus 155 Hornady XTP-HP's and RP 165 gr. Golden Sabers. My choice would be WSF 1st followed closely by Power Pistol and Unique and while AA#5 worked well it would be my last pick of the 4. All these powders performed well but WSF had noticeably less felt recoil and showed velocity that matched my reload data. All 4 more than half filled the case and would not allow a double charge. There are several good powders for 40SW but I've only tested these 4 and now load everything with WSF.

Powders for 40

I like several different powders. Clays works good for low- standard velocity loads with a 155 grain Berrys. It is clean burning and very accurate.My 2nd choice for the same type of load is 231/HP 38. Power Pistol can't be beat for full bore loads. YMMV.

Now that W571/HS-7 is no longer available I feel Longshot is a very good choice for the 40 S&W. I also agree with the above that AA#7 is a better choice than AA#5 for the 40 S&W. I read an article in the June 2013 Handloader and it tells of the first tests on the 40 were done with fast pistol powders with poor results. They found the slower powders delivered much better results. They highlighted AutoComp, True Blue, Power Pistol and they threw in one fast powder for comparison, Titegroup. Too bad they didn't also use AA#7 and Longshot.

I feel a 165gr bullet and Longshot are a match made in heaven in the 40 S&W.

WST for my 180gr match loads, W231/HP38 works great in .40 also. I burned about 18lb of WST last year in .40, and .45.

I mainly use Unique or Power Pistol, mainly because I bought 8 lb jugs of them. I do have some True Blue laying around without a purpose, so perhaps I will give it a try, although I mainly use 155gr bullets.

I use and like HS-6 for all my .40 loads except 1 light load and use Titegroup for that since HS-6 likes pressure to burn completely.

Long shot would be another powder worth a look.

Another +1 for Longshot. Although it has been a long time since I shot and reloaded for my .40's, Longshot was and is the only powder I use for it; burns fairly clean, high velocities and reasonable pressures.

I use W231 for "normal" loads and Clays for the powder puff loads.

I use Hodgdon Universal for all of my .40 loads.

Cast Lead, jacketed or plated ..... makes no difference.

The only trouble I have with Universal is finding it. I'm down to the last bit and I can't find it anywhere.
