I just moved my reloading gear to NC. Do I need to pay special attention to the enviorinment that my powder and primers is stored in?

I have access to an old refrigerator that still seals...should I use it as a dehumidifier or is that really necessary?

Nope. No special precautions are necessary. Keep the lid on the containers and everything should be just fine. Primers are the same. I had my reloading setup in the garage and had zero troubles with humidity.

Hell, I live in N.C. as well. I keep my reloading stuff in my laundry room. Personally, I wouldn't keep any reloading stuff or pistols in the garage cause it's just to hot in there. But let you what, you ain't got nothing to worry about as long as you keep the top on your powder.

Where in the greatest State did you move. I'm in Charlotte. Is it me or are rounds more powerful in the Queen city.

Heat's probably more of an enemy than humididty; as said, keep the lids on tight.

For me, the coolest place in the house is commonly the floor of the bedroom closet, so that's the happy home for powder and primers.

The humidity is not as big a problem as the high temps are in the south. Keep your primers and powder in a closet in the house as temps in a garage or shed can get into the triple digets in the summer. While powder won't go bad in a year or two it does degrade and several years storage in high temps it will go bad. Over the years I have had several friends give me powder stored in their garage or shed for several years or from widow friends of their wives that were useless for anything but spreading on the lawn. The nitroceulose that powder is made from breaks down and is a great source of nitrogen fertilizer.

You're in the Humid South?

Powder here near Cocoa Beach FL hasn't been degraded for at least the last 5 years, and as far as I'm concerned, Steve's experiencing a dry heat up there in South Carolina. ;)
