I have some Power Pistol onhand and need to load some 45 ACP. I have looked over the load data, and am thinking 7.0 g over a 230g FMJ ought to give about 800 fps or more. Does anyone have experience with a load similar to this?

Anywhere from 7.0 to 7.5 has worked well for me with the 230 gr FMJ (Sierra) or LRN (Laser-Cast). I load them to 1.260 OAL and put a healthy crimp on them (in the neighborhood of .469). The 7.5's are a little warm, but I've found them to be quite accurate and they'll hit a gong at 50 yards with authority. I don't have a chrono, but the data I'm looking at says that 7.0 will give you about 850 fps out of a 5" barrel and 7.5 will bump it up to a little over 900 fps.

BTW, the latest data from Alliant indicates a maximum charge of 8.1 gr for a 230 FMJ loaded to 1.260 OAL. I would try 7.5 first and approach 8.1 with caution, though. Hope this helps.

I have a can of Power pistol but I haven't tried Power Pistol in 45ACP. I've only used it in 9mm and 40 S&W. I prefer N320 for 45ACP but I also use clays, Unique, Bullseye, AA, and Unique depending on my mood.

I guess I'll load up a ladder of Power pistol for 45acp and see how it works in one of my 1911's. I'll probably use a double stack Para.

How does recoil with Power Pistol compare with an equivalent velocity load with Unique?

You should be able to match Unique velocity at similar pressure, or beat it overall.
Alliant shows a max vel of 881 fps with a 230 gr bullet and Power Pistol compared to 806 fps with Unique.
I use PowerPistol with 185gr HPs at ~ 975 fps in my 5" Kimber. Again Alliant shows Power Pistol giving 1047 fps and Unique 1015 FPS for this bullet wgt. It`s good stuff IMO.

my pet load for 45acp JHP's utilizes power pistol. In my 5inch para gi expert I have worked up some loads that are accurate out of my gun and pretty stout.

230gr Winchester JHP
Starline Nickel Plated Brass
CCI Large Pistol Primer #300
7.3gr Power Pistol
1.230 OAL

Chrono'd at 920 fps with a std dev of 5 extreme of 8. Measured ten feet away from muzzle 5 shot string.

Yup. Bullseye is better. I like 5 grains under a 230. Less flash, less blast, period correct load.

7 grains of Power Pistol, 225 grain TCFP fired from my SIG P220 over a ProChrono Digital gets 866 fps Average, ES 21 SD 10. Also have found Power Pistol to make for extremely accurate 200 grain LSWC ammo too, when driven by 6.7 grains.

Be careful, it runs hot for me too. If you don't have a chronograph it might get you into trouble or at least beat the hell out of your pistol.

I loaded Hornady 230gr XTP-HPs up to max loads in the Hornady manual and ended up in the 1000-1050 fps range. I load to about 900fps and I like it a lot. The only benefit over Bullseye is that I imagine my pressures are ever so slightly lower. Otherwise it seems like almost the same stuff.

This is coming out of a Les Baer TRS with 15,000 down the pipe.

This was using a 230g. Golden Saber seated to 1.23oal.

7.0 Power Pistol 875fps
7.2 Power Pistol 900fps
7.46 Power Pistol 918fps

The most accurate load I have ever tested.

This is a full magazine of the 7.46g. load, 15 yards freehand.
