a guy here at work has an old walther ppk/s 380 that doesn't feed well, it ejects the old case but when feeding the unfired in it almost is like a two stage loading, it'll go partway, stick for a second then chamber. the recoil spring feels ok, plenty of pressure when pulling the slide back, the feed ramp looks smooth, no nicks or burrs, the gun is clean and I tried different ammo. any suggestions on what to look for?

I had that happen once when I didn't lube the slide very well during a shooting session. With a short-slide travel, I believe in a generous lube (in my case, grease) even though many feel somehow this is harmful.
Anyway, I believe that most malfunctions are KISS, and not that complicated before one starts changing out parts, etc...:)

I thought about that too, when he first gave it to me to shoot it was clean but a little on the dry side, I took the slide off and lubed with rem oil, no difference in loading. that's the first thing I thought of, that it needed cleaning and lubed up

my older mid 70's ppk/s was consistant in that it never did all things right. FTFeed from the magazine, FT chamber fully, FTFire, FTExtac, FTEject, stove pipes on the feed and/or the eject. multiple trips to the factory & local gunsmith [ who sold it to me]; and who also took it back as the POS that it was.
as beautiful as it is on the outside it is that ugly on the in.
all the sa's in the forty years since [ including a 1st production run Colt pony pocketlite] dont add up the the troubles this one POS had.

many more people will say they 'had' a walther ppk type than will say that they have it. junk at any price is still junk and they have always been priced high. go figure.

if you do get yours running [100 rounds in a row with zero problems] call guinness. yours may well be the first.

It could be your mag springs. You said the gun was an older Walther. How old are the mags?? I've read of many fellows that had problems feeding but couldn't figure out what was the cause. They changed mags (as in they ditched the cheapo imitation mags and bought quality factory or mec Gar mags) or changed the springs for either new wolff springs or extra power wolff springs. Changed the way the gun functioned, at least that was their claim. My Walther shoots just fine, but I only use factory mags and they are relatively new compared to an older Walthers mags.

+1 on mags, if you have exhausted ammo issues as the source of any potential problems (and not all PPKs feed all brands of ammo efficiently). Ammo and mags are always the places to start, and most all problems can be cleared up right there with these otherwise fine guns.

hate to say this..

..but it took me buying and trading about 4 Walther PPK or PPK/Ss before I found one that was completly reliable. I love the way the Walther points, conceals, looks, etc. That's why I kept going back to the design. Now I have an Interarms stainless PPK that chews through anything. Sounds like you have given the gun a thorough going over. Like others have said, try new mags. If not, maybe it's time to move on.:banghead: Good luck.

Wow, that's weird. I've heard stories like this before from others too. I bought my first Walther 2 years ago and she hasn't had one hiccup. She's eaten ANYTHING from premium SD ammo to my dirty reloads like a champ. I love the Walther design so much I bought a second one this time in ppk. That one also ate through everything that I put in her mag. I gave that one to my Father in Law as a present and he has shot that little gun ragged. He loves it and he hasn't had any problems at all with any ammo either. Both of these Walther were from the much maligned Houlton Mass. factory.

Is a S& W or by Interarms?

Interarms, I think I'll tell him to sell it and buy a Colt Mustang

I'd try a different magazine.

My well-worn blue Interarms PPK/s has been 100% reliable with everything I have put through it. Not so much as a hiccup. Never had a failure of any kind. I would not carry it if it had not been 100% reliable for me. It loves Remington 88-grain JHP's and Remington FMJ's. But cycles Sellier & Bellot, PMC, Wolf, Fiocchi, Federal, etc 100%. I use magazines with the Walther banner or Mecgar.

I bump the back edge of the loaded magazine before inserting it in my 32 ACP. This orients the rounds properly in the mag. Never had any problems with this beautiful, German PPK.
