practical scope on a 358 winchester

my dad gave me his 03 springfield customized in .358 winchester and im wanting to replace the cheap 3-9x33 deerfield scope. i know the scope question is asked way to much, but im really wanting some thoughts on what size and powers i should get on a new scope for the round. i dont want anything bigger then a 40-44mm tops. i dont think an a/o is necesary, but i might be wrong. and i really cant see any shots further then 150 yards in a practical situation for my uses, and that may be pushing it. its more er less gonna be a missouri brush gun. so i was thinkin a 3-9x40 leuplod er something long those lines. any other thoughts?

I have a 2x7 Leupold on my .30-06 M70. For where I use it, which is primarily thick woods, it has been ideal. Lighter and more compact than a 3x9, I've found that I use the low end of the settings a lot more than the upper.

I think that the 2-7 Leupold and the 1.75-6 Leupold scopes are ideal for the 358 Winchester round. This combo is very fast in the woods, and an excellent choice for Elk in the alders, hogs, and other fast moving animals that thrive in thick cover.

Since you're shooting at relatively close range, a 2.5x or 4x fixed power scope should serve you well and be easier on your wallet. Check out such scopes from Weaver, Nikon, and Leupold.

My BLR in .358 has a compact 1.5 - 5. I think it matches the characteristics of this cartridge just fine.

Leupold VXII 1-4x20 or VXIII 1.5-5x20. At most, a VXIII 1.75-6x32.

I would find an old/used fixed power 2.5x or 3x Burris or Leupold in excellent or better condition.

They are about as tough and compact a scope as you will find, have excellent glass, 20mm objectives, good field of view - and no bell. They will compliment your rifle and cartridge perfectly IMO.

Burris and Leupold will repair or replace for free.

Either ther Vari-XIII 1.5-5x20 or the Vari-XIII 1.75-6x32 would be my choice.
I have the 1.5-5 on a Ruger #1 in .45/70 and thinks it's the greatest thing going for a short to medium range combo.

I've got a REM Mod 7 with a mannlicher stock from the custom shop in .350 Rem mag. Same concept, light, quick midrange rifle. I mounted a 1.25-4 X Swarovski on it. The combination of low maginification and the light rifle make for an awesome woods rifle.

Shot a 5x4 bull with it at about 200 yards and the 4x wasn't a problem.
