So I was over at Gander mountain in NC just north of Charlotte on Saturday morning checking out some fishing gear. I of course had to wander over to the gun cases for a bit. I have been eying up some compact S&W 40s for a bit and as they were not busy I had the clerk pull a couple of them out for me to get a good look at.
I was very surprised with the safety awareness the clerk showed. Every gun he pulled out, he pulled and checked the clip, and racked the slide to verify the chamber was empty. There was one weapon I had him pull out twice and both times he did the same thing. I have been to a ton of gun stores (including the local BPS) and this guys was probably the most consistent on safely handling guns in the store I have seen. He was careful not to point the gun in any unsafe direction and treated them almost like they were made of glass, just very good with not marking up the new merchandise.
Along with that, he knew his schtuff very well and at the same time was extremely impartial on the guns in the store. Usually, a clerk (who is human after all) will have some sort of religious affiliation with a specific brand, and/or model. While he could give out pluses and minuses he was not pushy either way.
Was not something I expected from a big box type of store employee. I have had big and small store owners and clerks who failed to consistently check weapons, or pointed them all over (not that usual actually) once they were checked. You could tell this dude had his safety down to a habitual pattern of behavior.
Anyway. Wanted to throw that out there. As I will be quick to hammer someone for utter incompetence, to be fair, I also make it a policy to be quick to praise for excellent service.
