I have an opportunity to acquire a Pre '64 Win. model 70, cal. .30-06.

I am more of a milsurp, turn bolt guy.

My questions,

Has anyone ever cut stripper clip guides into one?

Would it be considered sacrilege to do so?

What're these worth?

Thanks

Would it be considered sacrilege to do so?

Yes.

What're these worth?

A good amount. Hard to say exactly, without any information.

Pre-64 Winchesters are valued as working guns and as collectibles. Many would finger that .30-06 as one of the best production hunting rifles ever made.

The factory put stripper clip guides in some match rifles by making the rear ring longer than a standard rifle. The rear ring of the receiver on a standard rifle is behind the magazine. I don't know how you would cut guides at the rear ring and have the guides work.

Yes, it would be a a sacrilege to modify/ruin a pre 64 Model 70 receiver.

Once you handle & shoot a Pre-64 Model 70, your taste for old mil-sups will quickly change!

The pre war (which meant WWII) pre 64's had clip slots milled into the receiver. Then the National Match pre 64's had clip slots milled into them.

Many Highpower shooters had their actions Clip slotted, and you will occasionally run into these. These rifles do not look like production rifles as the competition shooters installed heavy stocks with adjustable buttpads and heavy barrels.

The M70 bolt has faded fast from Highpower shooting since the introduction of the Tubb rifle. However lots of people purchased clip slot adapters for their M700's and M70's. All you had to do was use the rear scope mount screws and attach the device to your rifle.

Champion Choice used to carry these. Might want to look through their catalog.

Thanks fellas, I might go look at it again and see if I want to deal with making the trade the current owner wants.

My 1939 M70 has a stripper clip slot. It also has a Redfield peep sight snugged under the scope, just behind the rear scope mount. To achieve that, the sight disk had to be removed, and it is stored under the butt plate.

SlamFire1 is correct the Pre WWII rifles with .06 bolt faces were clip slotted (the magnums were not).

Do not destroy the value of your rifle by having it clip slotted.

Do you know where you can buy a clip guide now? I am looking for one also.

cut up a pre 64, just think of it like you would your personal crown jewls. would you like to have someone cut them up?! if you buy it, treat it nice. if not for you, for the next guy. i know that they are production rifles. but they were one of the best production rifles ever made. would you chop up a roy weatherby rifle? i think not!

Your best bet for a clip guide to screw down to the rear scope mount holes is Mo's
