I recently purchased a pre 64 model 70 featherweight winchester rifle in 30-06. The stock is in new condition and I would like to put a finished replacement stock on it for general use; and if I decide to sell it put the original stock back on. My question is will a standard pre 64 Winchester stock fit a featherweight barreled action? Also any suggestions on other FINISHED stocks that might be available. Thankyou for your time and patience.

    No, it won't fit.

Among other things, the pre-64 Featherweight didn't have the rear sight dog-knot on the barrel, and the standard stock is inletted for it.

The featherweight gets a specific stock because it was the only pre 64 model that didn't have the dog knot in the barrel. Standard and Supergrades had "the knot". You didn't mention a price range. A McMillan Edge stock would be the finest lightweight stock you could put on it IMO.

Thankyou for your time and expertise; this is my first pre 64 Winchester model 70 and if it proves accurate enough I may go the Mcmillan route.

If you inletted a post 64 stock (with a dremel tool) for the dog knot, then would the featherweight action fit?

No. You have it backwards. The dog knot is not on the featherweight. It will fit in a stock for a standard or supergrade but you'd have inletting for the knot in those stocks but no knot on the barrel of the featherweight.

The standard stock will fit the featherweight. There will be a cut out area in the barrel channel were the"dog knot"[also known as the rear sight boss] would be, but except for looks, it is of no importance.

pcunnin2, depending on how much you want to spend i can put you in touch with a stockmaker in houston that makes exact copies of pre-64 winchester stocks.
he ain't cheap but his stock are good enough to fool the experts.
i believe he gets around $700 for a fully finished super-grade stock with buttplate & inletted swivels, i'm not sure what he gets for the standard pre-64 stocks.
