Pre64 safety question

Can anyone check if this is typical?

On a pre-64 Winchester Model 70, I close the bolt and put the safety to intermediate position.

I then open the bolt.

If I push the safety to fire, the firing pin moves forward a bit, but NOT fully forward to fire. [edited; previously this post said the trigger goes off but that’s wrong]

This is not the case with the modern Model 70. On that one, when the bolt is open, I cannot move the safety.

Thanks

I have a pre-64 Model 70 downstairs in the gun safe, but I don't want to take the time to go dig it out right now. However, my wife's post-94 Model 70 with the "pre-64 action" is sitting in the corner (it's still elk season here ;)), so I tried moving its safety with the bolt open. It wouldn't move.

When you put the safety on it firing pin should move back a corresponding amount. You are physically blocking the firing pin back when you put on the safety.

I checked on the safety with my post ‘64 7mm RM. Same thing here, the safety wing doesn’t move from the center position when the bolt is open.

Stay safe.

I have a Model 70, 1960 vintage. I put the safety in the middle slot and open the bolt. The safety will move to the "fire" position, there is a snap sound as if the pin is released, but it does not protrude from the breech face.

That sounds like what is happening on my transition model late 1940’s Model 70. Very helpful! Looks like perhaps the safeties have a different design pre vs post-64. Pre64 can move safety with open bolt, from middle to fire. Post64 cannot move safety if bolt is open.

Put safety in middle position. Open and remove bolt. Turn bolt over to see underside. Push safety to fire position. What you see will give you clear understanding. Repeat if nesessary .
