I have a post 64 push feed winchester 70 featherweight chambered in .280 remington. My safety wouldn't engage, unless it was moved with extreme force, sometimes pliars. once engaged to the first detent, it would move back and forth easily, between Safe1 and Safe 2. if moved to fire, it wouldn't move back to safe. i completed the following to repair it.
WARNING:::::::
removing the firing pin spring from the pin, is not an easy feat... please wear safety glasses and be careful if you chose to do this. likely a cheap fix by a gunsmith, but i'm stubborn.
1. remove the bolt
2. remove the firing pin assembly, depress the retaining button and unscrew the firing mechanism out.
3. this is the hard part. relieve the pressure off the safety, by moving it to fire. crunch down on the spring, and remove the retainer. and pull the spring off... making sure which order to put it back. VERY very hard to do it. i took a stainless steel ruler with holes drilled in it, and cut a U shape so that i could remove it. used the ruler to push down on the spring. pull the firing pin out, and using a dremel tool i used a buffing wheel and a wire wheel to polish the safety lever, and cleaned it all very good. covered with moly grease because i am fond of it, and put it all back together. Safety now works flawlessly. still a little hard to get from fire to safe.. but plenty easy enough to utilize.
