If you think because you dont live in San Fran that what happens here is of no consequence read on. The link below goes to a web site of anti gun zealots who have chronicled their successes.

Precedent for Banning Handguns

As the majority of all firearms regulations fall upon the states individually, each state (and sometimes each county within a state) has the authority to ban handguns. The following represent three cases of local councils successfully banning handguns.

Morton Grove, Illinois

The town completely banned the sale and possession of handguns in 1981.
The NRA and others in the gun lobby promptly filed suit in Federal Court.
The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ban in 1982, stating that "possession of handguns by individuals is not part of the right to keep and bear arms."
The United States Supreme Court refused to hear the case when it was appealed, and the handgun ban in Morton Grove remains today.
See Morton Grove, Ill., Ord. 81-11.

Yes, no ?????, we all know about morton grove. Its like the single most famous travesty of justice in the past 3 decades relating to the 2nd A.

It would be great if the attorney general sued to overturn morton grove at the urging of that recent OLC memo. More than likely something else will make the precedent and Morton Grove will simply be invalidated. Assuming we can get the 2nd before the court.

edit: the reason SF cant ban handguns is because CA state law forbids local firearms ordnances and reserves that right to itself. LA and SF have ????ty reputations because the local LEOs wont sign off on CCWs. People there still have guns. I mean the koreans didnt make a day trip to NV during the riots- they already had all those guns. The whole state has a ????ty reputation for 2nd amendment issues because of the stupid laws the state has.

Crime went up substancially in Morton Grove afterwards.

Kennesaw, Georgia on the other hand made gun ownership mandatory at the same time. Crime went down there.

ok i am seeing a lot of comments about SF- i guess ill look it up, they are trying to ban handguns here? (i am 6 mi from there)
very FUNNY. all the recent problems have been with AK-47s and the like!
what good does a handgun ban make anyway? ?

also- i see mentions of all these cities, why not NYC?
the whole state has Major handgun controls as i remember it. (im from there)
not sure what the actuall rules are, but know for most part you have to be 21, have a special permit, take tests, etc. and that is to OWN a handgun, not carry.
pretty sure you can't have it in your car either.

heheh- as pretty much a NYer, i have always thought CA was pretty lax on the guns.........
