.300WM looks like the best 1000yd choice on paper, but again, can I make the recoil manageable with a heavier barrel? Also ammo seems expensive for coming up to speed at 1000yds.

If you're talking 1K yards, the .300WM is -the- choice, imho. And like it was said above, weight is your friend. My Sendero weighs a ton but is VERY good on a bench. I just wouldn't want to lug it up and down Colorado mountains on an elk hunt.

And if you reload, it's a whole lot cheaper to shoot. I can shoot my .300 with match-grade top-shelf ammo (IMR4350, Sierra Matchkings, Winchester Mag rifle primers, new winchester brass) for as much per round as you can buy surplus .30/06.

Serious range requires serious rifles, optics and ammo. And MUCH practice.

If you want something versatile that can fulfill the "tactical" rifle criteria and be used for hunting, you might want to also look at a Rem 700 LTR. Its lighter weight will be much more comfortable to carry around on those long hunting hikes. Yet, it's still should serve you well to 700 yards or so. If you decide you need more reach, you can always change to a longer barrel or re-barrel to a different caliber like a .260 or .243 very easily.

I'm putting together a MRC 1999 barreled action in .30-06 with an AI stock, for target and longer range hunting. (I thought about getting an older Winchester M70 and rebuilding from that base, but went with the MRC instead...) I have a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20X scope for it and Warne mounts and rings. Should weigh around 12 lbs w/ scope.

I don't know how it will shoot, yet. Optimistic. If it shoots well, I will post results. Might serve as a guideline for others trying to put together a .30-06 bolt-action after Winchester's demise...

Wow, more comments, thanks!

I'm still wanting the bolt action, but a friend has put another bug in my ear about a nice AR style precision setup like I had planned months back.
It takes me forever to make up my mind, but I have a feeling I'll do so within a few weeks.

I really doubt I'll ever get out to 1000yrds around here... Or at least where its practical to shoot at. 500 is stretching it too.
