Wow, Monday quarterbacking at it's finest.

You know what, to everyone on here saying what he did was a bad thing, all I can tell you is YOU WEREN'T THERE.

Personally I follow the "if they see it, they are hearing it" and don't allow those who may need some dicipline to know that they are approaching a diciplenarian.
So our OP gets a thumbs down on the show and tell.
However the level of agressiveness in our local panhandlers "shakedown artists" is seemingly growing at a quick pace, and I think must be matched.
We all and sundry realize that those who would aggress against us, pick those of us who give the impression of easy pickins. A strait spine ,determined step, and level gaze, has probably averted(or re-directed) more anti-social behavior, than any Expressed show of beligerance.
I would like to let our young friend(theOP) know that while admiring his grit,
and alertness, it's the snake that doesn't rattle, that does the biteing.
OP; ya done good, tone her down ,OK?

Based solely on what the OP actually said, there is little question that what he did was probably ill advised, especially since the other people in the car did not feel threatened at all. Are you arguing that what he said was incorrect or incomplete in some way? I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that what he said is what actually happened.

The OP obviously posted to get comments on what he claimed happened. In effect, he asked for MMQBing, sort of like an after action report.

Thats my story and im stickin to it......

Honest officer i was peeling a apple and eating it.. No sir i finished my apple and tossed the peeligns and core out the window for the birds and rats around here... I nodded caus ei thought i knew him

Brandishing a knife (or any other weapon for that matter)makes no sense whatsoever- if you are going to use it, they shouldn't even know that you have it until its too late.

It was preventative. If this guy would cross a knife to get my car, maybe he deserves it. The car, that is, unless he doesn't get across my knife in the first place.

Strategically, when you showed him your weapon, you took all of the guesswork out of the equation for the guy on the street. You "showed your cards." Now he knows whether to fold, or to call your bluff and raise the ante by using a presumably more lethal weapon.

Having said that, in the above situation, when carrying both a knife and a pistol, is there a strategic advantage to showing the knife first (as in back-off) while keeping the firearm ready for immediate use if the situation escalates?

I wouldn't think so, because a gun is long-range. It is arguably an immediate fight stopper up close as well. If you're getting carjacked and you've readied you gun before in anticipation of it, then it's just an bent finger away from 'conflict resolvement'.

You did the right thing. I know what it's like to have parents like that. You just can't please some people. The best you can do is to do what you know is right and ignore the people who don't like it. Don't worry about your parents, just agree to disagree. Continue to do what you believe to be right and ignore their protests. Getting unjustly punished is better than being a victim.
