Congratulations to me, I found out tonight that my wife is pregnant. We've been trying for a while so I'm pretty ecstatic at the moment.

I've been wanting to get a decent home defense gun, and my wife fired a 38 the other day and liked it, so she gave me the go ahead for a .357. I was planning on getting a Ruger or S&W because I like the idea of resale, but with a baby on the way I'm more interested in stopping anyone that comes into my house, plus I have other things like cribs to spend my money on. I know that Taurus isn't the best that there is, but it will put a round where I need it to be. I'm thinking of buying a Taurus 357, any recommendations for what model? Preferably a lighter weight more for firing 38s for my wife.

I know I can pick up X model of S&W or whatever used for the same price, but my wife doesn't trust used guns. She grew up with a Taurus and her dad loves them, so that's what we will be buying. Any help is appreciated.

No negative comments please, let me be happy.

How Big?

You looking to keep this around the house?

Suggest medium to large frame with four-inch barrel.

If you're thinking of carry, then be aware of recoil issues on the lighter frames.

Taurus is okay quality.

Without knowing all the usage plans, I'm suggesting something like their M66. It's a 7-banger.

Enjoy.

Asking for advice without risking hurting your feelings is like asking us about what we think about your new kid.
Get a firearm you like, don't worry about resale value. If you buy it, shoot it and your wife likes it, it will be a good thing to own. Why would you buy it and sell it >
Don't worry about the cost of cribs. Your child will out grow it before you shoot 200 rounds out of any snub nose.

I've got the little 5 shot Taurus 85 SS with boot grip.Very accurate at seven yards, but still get hits on a paper plate out to 25 yards. The ONLY thing I don't like about it would actually be a plus for a new daddy, the hammer lock. There's this lil' allen key thingy [tech term] in the hammer that completely disables the gun, even if loaded.a twist of the key/tool and yer ready to defend home and family.I wear the key on a dog tag chain, along with a micro light.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Sign him/her up for the Junior NRA as soon as you can!

My only suggestion towards a gun is to get a good gun lock since you will have a little explorer on your hands in a year or so.

Again, congratulations to you and your wife and best of luck to you once the morning sickness kicks in... :p

You mentioned protecting your FAMILY (congratulations) in your home, so I would suggest the Taurus 608 for $463 from Bud's + a $20 or so transfer fee to a gun shop near you. You'd just pick it up there after filling out the normal paperwork.

The 608 is good for EIGHT rounds of .357 magnum and has enough heft to it to keep recoil managable. The M66 that ArfinGreebly mentioned is a good bet too... it just depends on how much money you can allow. The 608 is big and heavy, but if it isn't leaving the house, I'd call that extra weight a good thing. In the worst case scenario, it would make an excellent bludgeoning tool.

Consider it, and PLEASE, be aware of the risks involved with your wife being around gunfire. The airborne lead, especially in an indoors environment, is BAD news for a pregnant woman.

Here it is, nice and big in case you don't make it through my rambling :) :

DON'T TAKE YOUR WIFE TO THE RANGE.

Pardon my abrasive font. It's for the children.

Congrats

I am not sure about any Taurus revolvers but I do have the Taurus Pt 1911SS and it also has the Hammer Lock that BHP FAN talked about and I have never used it, if I remeber correctly it can not be done accidently it takes a consious effort to do.

Again I do not know anything about their revolvers I was just commenting on the hammer locking mechninsim but in my experiance Taurus weapons are a good value for the money

so she gave me the go ahead
:barf::barf::barf:

She "gave" you the "go ahead" huh.

Are you one of these guys who thinks that buying something not explicitly approved by her constitutes rebelling against her?

Do your kid a favor and start him/her off on the right foot by not asking your wife's permission. Your kid will see that and copy it later in life. If your wife likes the .38 then fantastic, she's got something to shoot. But be man enough to not base your decisions off what she approves of. Or don't. Whatever. Guys who ask their wive's permission feel validated when guys disapprove and tell them to "man up." It's as if they run to their wife MORE because of the "meanies" who told him not to ask her permission. *sigh*

P.S. shooting a .357 inside a home is bad for the people your trying to protect, for a list of reasons. Turning a home intruder into hamburger is not required, especially at the cost of your hearing and/or someone innocent in the next room. That being said, owning a .357 is a basic staple of any man's arsenal. Not having one would be like a grocery store not carrying flour.

One other thing....stock up on sleep, now.

Once the baby arrives, fuggedaboudit....I learned that the hard way....3 times. :) :D :p

That being said a baby is a joy, and a precious gift from above. Warmest wishes to you and Mrs. neededausername. :D :D :D :D

Never owned a Taurus, but have shot a few models. They seem to be reasonably well made, and put the lead where aimed.

A model 19

with a four inch barrel would fill the bill. Plus it will be a joy to shoot and an heirloom for the child in 21 years.
Congratulations.

I have a 357. Taurus M650 with the 2 1/2 inch barrel and hammerless option. It runs around 375 bucks and is well worth the money. It also has the internal lock system and comes with 2 keys. I enjoy it and its quality is fine.

Dagnabbit - I have a crib in the garage I can't GIVE away! Good shape, too...
My $.02, three or four inch barrel, no snubbies. Crimson Trace lasergrips, if you can afford them, invaluable in the dark. Night sights will work, too.
Practice, practice, and congrats, Dad!

For about the same money as a Tarus you may be able to find a Ruger security six, either 2 3/4 or 4 inch would suit your needs well. It should hold or even go up in value.
A M10 or M15 Smith would work too, but is 38spl only.
What ever you buy, do it soon, the price of hand guns is going to go up.

I understand, you have a lot going on right now, important decisions to make, and the last thing you need is someone creating doubt in any of the decisions you are about to make. I'm right there with ya, got 3yr old and a 2mo, and just bought my own first gun.

With that said, here are my suggestions:

1. Look around, make sure you like what you buy

2. Get what you want, $$ permitting

I think the Taurus revolvers are pretty much S&W copies, I heard they even bought some of the old S&W tooling, its' mostly a US vs.foriegn thing. Not familiar with Taurus model #"s, but I would probably go with a small framed 38+p for the wife, like a SW model 60, 642, or maybe the 60. Personally I was going to go with 357 640, but load it with 38's for home defense. I ended up getting SW/Walther SW99 40 auto for less than revolver, for now, I was slightly persuaded toward auto due to current election, figure the revolvers will be there for a while.

Or maybe a shotgun for the best BANG of the BUCK. 12GA for under $300, or maybe 20GA for wife.

As for investments: Unless you are looking for hierloom, consider used baby furniture, great bargians out there, craigslist and such, or get the FREE one from armoredman. They only need it 2-3 years tops. I know, it may be a little hard to convince wife.

I agree with Arfin. Too many people buy a lightweight J frame gun for the wife only to find the recoil unbearable. Start with standard wadcutters (not a bad SD round) and work up from there if you can.

I heard they even bought some of the old S&W tooling,

Nope. The two guns have very few parts that can be used in each other without major work.

You won't find a new Security-Six, or Model 19, for less than several hundred dollars more than the Taurus.

Use .38 Special loads to learn on, and, if she's recoil-shy, to defend with. Home defense guns tend more towards 4" barrels, and mid-size frames. Why beat the gun, and yourself, up?:)

Do your kid a favor and start him/her off on the right foot by not asking your wife's permission. Your kid will see that and copy it later in life. If your wife likes the .38 then fantastic, she's got something to shoot. But be man enough to not base your decisions off what she approves of. Or don't. Whatever. That's right! Show her who's boss. Maybe slap her around a little to make sure she understands. She has NO say so about how the money in the house is spent. After all, you make it and you've got her right where every woman needs to be -- barefoot and pregnant. Just keep her that way. If your kid is a boy, you sure don't want him to treat his mother with any respect and ask her permission to do anything. If your kid is a girl and you start listening to your wife, you might end up at a ballet or a piano recital someday. You need to put an end to that BS before it gets started. . . . Oh yeah, start figuring out how to make those child support payments now.

Seriously, congratulations on the great news. Your life will be forever changed in a positive way. When starting a new family, it is very much the right thing to talk over major purchases. What constitutes a major purchase varies from family to family but I suspect a decent handgun would qualify in most young families. As the kid(s) grow and you earn more money and become more secure, your definition of a major purchase will change.

Taurus is an okay quality gun. I would also look for a used .38 spl SW Model 10 with 4 inch barrel. They are excellent quality handguns and can still be had at a reasonable price.

Stating with largest Taurus to smallest I have the 608, 627, 617, and 605. The 608 my be too big for the Wife. The 627 Is a nice size 4" the 617 is a 2" same frame size as the 627 but, with Fixed Sights, both 7 shooters. The 605 is a great Carry Gun. With the half inch longer Combat Grip 357 ammo is easy to handle. Try them out for size and buy the one that fits best.

You won't find a new Security-Six, or Model 19, for less than several hundred dollars more than the Taurus.
Maybe that's because the Security Six was discontinued 25 years ago and the Model 19 was stopped being made 10 years ago... :)

A pile of "dittos":

Totally agree on the used crib idea. We used a very inexpensive used one from Craigslist for our two boys and it's still got plenty of life left in it. It's not like a 7 to 20 pound body is going to wear out the mattress.

Also agree on getting your sleep now. If you can take a couple of long weekends together now with no particular plan but just hanging out, do. It's a treat you may not have again for a while. Those little ones are bundles 'o' joy, but they are a flavor of demanding that can't be reasoned with.

And finally, I recently bought a used-but-in-perfect-condition stainless Security Six for under $300. I know the missus is more comfortable with new, but it might be worth at least price and quality comparing.

Congratulations! Check out what you have to look forward to:

I'd personally buy a good, used S&W revolver over a Taurus anyday. It is a better gun, and many sell for more used than a Taurus does new.

When I first got into guns my brother, a collector, gave me some great advice. He said, "Don't skip a few bucks on an item that may have to be used to save your life, for your life is worth a few extra bucks to have a totally reliable gun!

T.

PS: I just put my money where my mouth is AGAIN . . . purchasing a "new" (for me) nickle plated S7&W Model 19 today, made in the early 80's. It is the newest S&W revolver I've bought in recent years too!

Looks great, is extremely accurate . . . and holds its value in case I want to trade it later for something else.

PPS: I bought my wife of 35 years a "new" revolver that she likes a whole lot for her birthday last March. It is a 3" barrel S&W Model 37 Airweight in .38 special.

The neatest thing about it is that it was made the year she graduated from high school . . . 1971. At a recent training class the LEO instructor told her she shot it so accurately that she could probably teach the class.

Don't fear a good condition S&W revolver! I trust my dear wife's life to that good ol' M37 . . . but I surely wouldn't feel that way about a new Taurus. Actually, the sales slut at a local shop TRIED to get me to "save money" and get the new Taurus instead. I just looked at him as if he was insulting my intellegence . . . and then he started pulling out the good stuff.

Yep, like my internet "name" implies, I'm a "S&Wfan!" I've had many . . . and won many a hangun match with my Smith revolvers. NONE have ever let me down!
