Pregnancy so I guess I'm buying a Taurus...

Congratulations on the news that a little tricycle motor is now on the way! :) You will be blessed many times over by becoming a father!

As to a suggestion for a Taurus (I like 'em!) I can wholeheartedly suggest a 608. I join Kind of Blued in that choice, as it is a great gun. I bought mine last Spring, have now put 1,350 rounds through it, and it is a joy to shoot. My wife loves to shoot .38 Special in it, though she doesn't shoot many of the heavier loads.

The gun is really pleasing to both of us, and the porting that it has reduces the felt recoil to where even the full-house .357s are not unpleasant to shoot.

All the best to you and yours!

Maybe that's because the Security Six was discontinued 25 years ago and the Model 19 was stopped being made 10 years ago...

You think?

I'd personally buy a good, used S&W revolver over a Taurus anyday. It is a better gun, and many sell for more used than a Taurus does new.

I know I can pick up X model of S&W or whatever used for the same price, but my wife doesn't trust used guns.

Older S&W revolvers have the added cachet of Internet Commandos predicting catastrophic consequences of their current trigger-lock, too. It's interesting that, despite years of such dire predictions, and the sale of a LOT of these revolvers, it hasn't made the rounds with anyone actually having had that occur during a self-defense situation. Neither, for that matter, has anyone who uses a Taurus for self-defense ever been let down by the gun in such a situation.

The man had already made it plain that he couldn't afford the price of a new S&W, and that the wife, who's going to be using the gun, doesn't trust used guns, for whatever reason. Why ignore those considerations? Would we rather fall back into the "just wait a while, and save up" BS? Get the gun, teach her how to shoot it. Then, she may have a better informed opinion about what she likes. It's entirely possible that she will want to go to a semi-auto.:)

Get what you want, you can always upgrade or change your mind later after.

Kinda like buying a motorcycle, I do not recommend anyone buying a GXSR 1000 as a first bike, even though they look really cool and offer superior performance. Start with a 500 or non R/RR 600. Learn what you like, dislike, and your usage. I still have my 'starter' bike, and still enjoy it.
