I think everyone here is concerned with protecting their ears. An ENT told me suppressors are the most effective thing you can do when shooting. However, I did come across this.

The military is studying Mg supplements for reducing noise-induced hearing loss. Apprently, it is effective to some degree:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8460390

Soldiers taking the Mg supplement had half the rate of hearing loss as the group that did not after exposure to gunfire in training. It looks like they used a fairly hefty does of Mg during the training period.

I've been taking a 100% RDA pill for a while now. The pills are really cheap though, about $4 for 250, so I think it's worth doing. I think it's too late for my ears, but it might help some of you.

Yeah this information has been out there for awhile. It used to include high doses of E as well as some A and C along with the magnesium.
Perhaps they have narrowed it down to just the magnesium.

Such things are always useful tools. If you discharge a firearm in a defensive scenario it might be time for some suppliments and a smoothie of the right veggies!

Of course what is best and what will be feasible can be quite different. Typically such things need to be done immediately so it will be present in the blood as soon as possible.
It reminds me of being exposed to blood or other infections material. If you are exposed to blood, have open cuts and injuries due to a struggle or fight, and could seriously benefit from immediately cleaning and sterilizing and maybe a propholayxis treatment which could all be the difference in wether you acquire a lifelong disease as a result of the exposure, you will instead be handcuffed and transported and sit at the station or in a cell after a defensive situation for many hours.
When seconds and minutes count, you won't be permited to do anything for a long time to mitigate your risk.
Likewise they are not going to let you start popping pills like a magnesium suppliment, and would probably think it was drugs if you did it on your own and choke and tackle you to retrieve it.
While if it is not a defensive situation you should be using adequate hearing protection, not gambling and trying to minimize the damage from inadequate hearing protection.

If you want to protect your hearing, do not expose your ears to loud or long sustained noises. Since that is impossible for folks who shoot unsuppressed guns, wear in the ear plugs, fully inserted - and over the ears muffs to protect the mastoid around the ear - not just when shooting, but using any 2 cycle unmuffled device like chain saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc

Sounds like unsubstantiated junk science to me. For two months my mother kept nagging me to get a shingles inoculation (for $200). She gets one and guess what? She almost immediately gets shingles. Then she starts in on why I need to go get a flu shot (for $50). She gets one and guess what? Now she has the flu. This nothing but marketing for the folks who make and sell this stuff. If you want to protect your hearing then use plugs and muffs. They actually work. If you damage the microscopic parts in your ear that translate sound into nerve impulses they are destroyed. They don't grow back and they cannot be repaired. Do not fall for these scams by the drug industry. These are the same people who produced and sold the drugs that now have us walking around with the very psychopaths who are shooting all of these people (in gun free zones). It's all about money.

Nothing is as good as preventing the exposure by using suppressors and double hearing protection, but any authoritative study of a systemic approach to reducing hearing loss is great to add to the whole approach of preventing hearing loss.

BTW, PubMed is the NIH part of this, the study appears to have been conducted in Germany in the 90's and isn't a National Institute of Health study. Most hearing loss/protection studies related to small arms fire is conducted under the auspices of the military.

Taking Mg supplements is not something I would have ever thought of as useful against hearing loss. Too bad the scientists had to torture guinea pigs with loud music to come to that conclusion. I'll stick with my doubled up ear plugs and muffs for now, I think.

I have been dealing with severe tinnitus since 2008 and have talked to a lot of doctors. It has become so bad that it is almost impossible to sleep. They all told me that once the damage is done it is permanent. I have tried everything i could find with no relief yet. I actually became suicidal at one point. Several neurosurgeons assured me that even if they cut the auditory nerve I would still hear the ringing. Take care of your ears.
