I was at the store today, doing some price comparing and fondling, when I spotted a S&W Model 457s. Now, I am looking for a .45...and this thing felt SO nice in my hand.

The gun store is asking $520 for it...I was wondering what people think of these guns, and if that sounds like a reasonable price...

priv8ter,

I did a search on TFL, here on TheHighRoad, and on
www.smith-wessonforum.com.
Everything I found was good.

I don't think I found any bad comments about the 457.
I bought a new, blue 457 for $449 on Friday.
That is probably not a bad price for a stainless gun.

I had tried a Ruger P97, which I liked a lot.
Very accurate, shot everything, and value priced.
It was too big for CCW for me, and I had to put a slip on grip on it, to tame the recoil.

I tried a Charles Daly ECM.
This is a "sub-compact" gun, I guess.
It was the same price as the Ruger, ($350), but had issues.
The slide tended to lock open with rounds left in the mag.
The gun shot low, even after a trigger job (which it really needed).
Though the gun was inexpensive, I found reports of similar problems with high dollar 1911s as well.

I have put around 150 rounds through the 457 so far.
Mine is a very accurate gun, from 10 yards, and 25 yards.
Recoil seems slightly more than a 9mm, but is not uncomfortable at all.
It fed a few hollow points that I tried with no problem.
4 different rounds all seemed to impact at point of aim.
With the P97, and with my Ruger P95, the first shot in DA mode is hard to get accurate hits.
With the 457, the smooth DA first shot is just as accurate as the SA shots that follow.

I think I have found my CCW/range/home defense .45.
