Howdy everyone, haven't posted in a while.

I was looking over the used counter and saw a nice looking 2.5" 686. I would guess that it has been shot quite a bit (the chambers definitely looked like it had seen a fair number of .38s). Probably around 85% wear, sights looked good, had some nice looking stocks. Rainbow color wood, smooth, short (couldn't fit the pinky on it). I didn't have a feeler gauge with me but the lock up seemed ok and you couldn't see too much light when I shined my surefire at the cylinder gap looking down the barrel.

Serial number CAY32xx model 686-4. What does that tell me about the quality of this firearm, year of manufacture etc?

Price is $259.99. Is this fair, good or great price?

Thanks in advance!

Well, smarter people than I can respond, but if it is good shape as you suggest, then a price of $259 seems excellent to me. I would buy it in a heartbeat at that price... assuming mechanically safe and sound, ...

In that condition $259 is quite a good price. Most I see around here in 95% or so are priced around $350 or more. These are good shooting guns - for that price its hard to beat:)

If it is mechanically perfect and if the metal and bluing are very good, then $260 is a very good price. (Make sure it doesn't have hammer push off. Thumb cock the hammer and try to push the hammer forward with your thumb. Hammer should not fall.)

Your S&W model 686-4 with S/N CAY32XX was manufactuered
between August of 94 and Feburary of 95; most likely October
of 94? To be more definitive would require the services of the
Smith & Wesson historian.

Sweet. Thanks for the replies. I think I may make the case to the CFO tonight...I better make a nice dinner!

Buy it, consequences be damned!! I see used ones go for $400.00 or more around here. I bought mine new in '99 for $399.00, and they are over $500.00 now.

The price may be too good to pass up but I had to pass it up. I just don't have the money to spend on toys and unless I sell another gun I can't buy it. It sucks when your wife has a job and you don't :-( To be fair she hasn't bought any toys in a long time either...she seems to think paying bills is more important....bah!

If anyone is interested it is in the used handgun counter at Gander Mountain in Rochester, NY.

found a good home

Wedge,

You'll be happy to know this gun found a good home, mine.
Well almost anyway. Still need to have added to my permit.

I saw it yesterday and have a soft spot for snubbies even thought I don't "need" it. I have a 2.5" M19 and a 6" 686. So I went searching for threads to help me justify buying another gun. Imagine my surprise when I found your thread stating ser. # CYA32XX and the same price with wooden grips! When I got to the bottom I noted you mentioned the same store.

I just couldn't resist. It really is a nice gun for the price. Do you ever shoot at GCL? If so, I'd be happy to let you try her out.

Best regards,

Joe
