Pinned & recessed, 3 1/2" barrel, 95% + blue, locks up like a bank vault. Shop is asking $395. About right? Too much? Just right?
Thanks in advance!
(Ooops! Not a model 28, but a 27. Sorry, I'm pretty new to revolvers!)

Smith didn't make the 28 with a 3 1/2 inch barrel. Besides, my sources tell me that a 99% 28 with 4 or 6 inch barrel is selling for $390. A 95% would sell for considerably less.

Maybe it's a 27. The 27 was offered with a 3 1/2 inch barrel and at 95% would probably sell for about that.

$395 would be a very good price for a 3.5 M27. This is a sought after barrel length and a top quality gun. I have seen such guns stated to be in 98% condition sell for $550-$600. This would make a 95% example well worth $395 IMHO. Add about $75 if it's in the wooden box.

It is a 27? O.K. That's different.

But what do you mean 95%? Wear at the muzzle? Mild pitting?

I've had guys try to sell me Smiths they advertised at 97% then when I got there it was maybe 90%.

If the piece is losing bluing at the muzzle and on the sharp edges, that's a fair price. There's an ad for an 8 3/8 inch barrelled m-27 at 99% nickled (much less desirable than your piece, to be sure) with presentation case for $595.

If you're looking strictly for a shooter, then it sounds like you've found your gun!

Thanks to all!

Sorry for the earlier confusion. It IS a 27. I'm a bit new to grading guns, Maybe what I'm calling 95% is better than that, maybe not. Slight cylinder ring, not even all the way through the blue. Just slightly thinned toward the muzzle. At any rate, as PinnedandRecessed said, I think I've found my shooter!

It's a fine gun. Sounds like 98% or better. That's a fantastic barrel length, too. My 27 is 5 inch. I also want a 3 1/2 inch. It's short enough to be handy yet with the large frame still controllable when shooting hot loads.
Good shooting. And it's a bargain price for a 27 in that barrel length.

Since you're new to revolvers, a little advice. Most dealers I've dealt with will dicker a bit. Ask what's the best price out the door for cash. Be nice. For a quick sale I've gotten $25 off and tax included on some.

It is a good price though. I have a 3 1/2" M27 I paid less for but it's not 98%.

At any rate, Smith & Wesson model 27's and 28's are gett'in
scarce as hens teeth in these parts of the country; so if you
want one, you had better jump on it! The last one I saw at
a gun show was a factory nickel one with 3.5" barrel, in the
mahogany case. Price was out of sight, at $750!

Best Wishes,

Ala Dan my friend, here so far 4" 28s aren't too hard to find. I passed on one a few weeks ago for $235 without bargaining. I have 2 and a 6" and this one was more of a shooter's grade. Now 27's,:what: those are tough to find in any configuration. The only one I've seen I bought and it could go back for a reblue.

Thanks again to all! Dealer wouldn't budge on the price, but threw in the tax and a box of Federal 125 gr JHP! I feel good! Whenever I get a camera, I'll give you all a look. You've earned it!:D

Ala Dan- I couldn't agree more about the 27's and 28's being scarce. I recetnly acquired a 4" 28-4 for about $240 OTD at a shop in Muscle Shoals. It's got some "character" to it, but I feel like I got a fine deal. I may end up having it refinished seeing as how it's not exactly a collector's item......

What say you about the refinishing?

I go in the local gun shops here in and around Tulsa fairly regularly, 27's and 28's are scarce! Matter of fact, 95%+ K and N frame Smith's in general are not redily found.

Rebluing

W Turner, try the S&W board (search). There's always someone there who has either just gotten a gun back from Smith or sending one. You can find out cost, turn around time and who to talk to. The general consensus seems to be it's worth it especially for a gun with no real collector value. The problem is N frames are starting to go up every time someone discovers them.:uhoh: They're an itch that can't be scratched!:D

Dinosaur- I have considerd trading it off. There is a local shop that has a good selection of collectible (to me) SW's including a 3" model 13 and a model 49 bodyguard that is 98%. They also have a 99% model 10 4" with the pencil barrel for $229.

I have heard of the problems with rapid DA fire in .357 N frames and have considered trying to get a deal on two of the three listed above. I don't like having guns that I can't shoot w/o fear of damaging them.

Someone on the S&W forum posted that a reblue from Smith cost $165 + shipping. Not too bad but trading for what you like might be the way to go too.

para.2,
I have seen the prices go up too...but I did pick up a 95% M-28 w/4" last summer for $260 out the door....but it was a fluke of sorts, I'd have had to pay a bit over $300 if I'd not been standing there when the "lil' old lady" sold it to the dealer.

I bought a refinished nickel 90% unit for $345 out the door in December. Another 4" unit.

I've seen them go for $250 in 85% condition and have also seen them prices over $400 w/box like new.

Good luck!

Bob
