Is $402.00 a good price for a new S&W 642? In case I'm getting my model numbers mixed up, it's a J-Frame, stainless steel/alloy, 5-shot .38 Special, with the internal hammer and a 1-7/8" barrel.

I've been meaning to get a snubby/pocket gun.

Funny thing? I'm also tempted by the Charter Bulldog .44.

Hrm. I wish Taurus wouldn't have discontinued their .45 Colt snubby.

Justa, welcome to THR.

NC, yeah, $402 may be a tad high. I paid $389 for mine.

But a 642 is worth that in NYC, LA, LV, Detroit and numerous other places.

A 642 in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Both of you, consider joining this thread. NC, you'll get a LOT of opinions on your price there.

Academy has lowest I've seen

$340 about 3 months ago.

Their prices are simply the lowest I've seen. This is one model I always look at to guage how pricey different shops are. If they charge more than $380 for a 642, I will not seriously consider buying a firearm from that store unless there is no other alternative.

$342 + tax.

Now I'm looking at the Charter Off Duty. 12.5oz and quite a bit cheaper than the S&W.

Thanks.

$400 is a bit high. Around St. Louis, they are stocked in gun stores for about $360-370. While online may be cheaper, shipping and transfer fees will hit the gunstore price in nothing flat.

Shop around and ask other stores. The 642 is worth doing some looking- won't snag in the pocket and it is quite accurate. Join our club... Jjjjjooooooiiiiiinnnnn our club...

A very repeat-worthy quote. IMHO, the 642 is the best carry piece.

Nightcrawler, we would be so honored if you joined the 642 Club. Sounds like you have the bug. Resistance is basically futile.

They go for about $350-$375 around here. Does it come with anything, like maybe the crimson grips or maybe a speed loader/holster etc?

You guys all seem to have done better price-wise than me. Like I said above, I paid about $380 or $390, if I remember correctly. (Will have to go fish out the receipt, but that sounds about right.)

In my case, it was almost the only game in town. There is another store here, but ... guess I'm just kind of 'stuck' on the one I bought my 642 (and most else) at. Good folks, usually get quite good deals.

I could have driven a couple of hours to Portland and maybe gotten it a few bucks cheaper, but with the price of fuel for my diesel :what: I'd have come out worse.

As for the price of the gun here, several of the gun shop folks - that I trust, as they seem like people of integrity to me - told me that gun right now is far and away the #1 handgun in this market for new gun owners buying HD guns. They claim they can't keep it in stock. They get in five, they sell them very quickly.

Is that price gouging, to put a slightly higher price on it because it sells well? Me thinks not, just reasonable business. If the gun is that good, the price should reflect it. They don't seem like "rich" folks there (compared to some other gun stores I've been in, where there's a whiff of aristocracy in the air), and they're very courteous, helpful and ever so patient with me and my questions. (And anybody who's hung out in other threads with me knows I never have an end to questions... )

Word's out on our little friend 642. ;)

There is only one gun shop in my area.

I honestly don't mind that his prices are a bit high. The economy in upper michigan basically sucks. It's very difficult for small, locally owned business to actually stay in business. The other gun store in the area closed down year ago, and this guy is a good guy.

My only other option would be to go to the Gander Mountain in Marquette, and their prices usually aren't any better. MI's gun prices are just high, it seems. I noticed that big time when I was in Tennessee...

About a month after I thought I did o.k. paying $349.95 for a 642 at Vance's gun shop in Columbus, Ohio, the local gun shop (Fin-Feather-Fur) in Ashland, OH. advertised them for $299.95 (NIB). Grrrr !:fire:
